I hate cars. Bought this car, honda prelude (4th gen) and paid 1600 for it. I've put $6000+ into this car and it's still fucked up. It has an idle problem and the last mechanic I took it to made it worse. The icing on the cake is that they're supposedly honda specialists. WTF. They didn't charge me for the work, but I'm sure as hell taking it back and making them fix that shit. I might have to get a new car but don't want to at all, and if I do, I'm going to keep this car anyway. Fucked if I do, fucked if I don't.

They are the only privately owned and operated domestic company now.
shine- move somewhere with public transportation. Owning a car is a rip off. Think how many bus/train tix you could have gotten with $7,500. Even taking a taxi might be cheaper if you factor in all the insurance and gas.

I hear ya, but I need a car, I hate public transportation, and I need transportation 24/7 due to the fact that I'm doin' thangs. Although, I also have a pass I use it to get to work everyday. Even though it's a huge headache I do love the lude, it's a unique car and I want to keep it around. I definitely bought a lemon, though. Just gotta deal with it. It was in great condition until this mechanic fucked it up, but I'll make sure he fixes it. The car doesn't break down or anything, it's just got a few small problems left

I love preludes, very slick lookin' car man. Sorry to hear about all you mechanical issues.. If you want to ensure good work gets done on your car take it to a honda dealer they'll hook you up (for a steeper price obv.).
Personally, I love my volvo. Can't go wrong with Swiss engineering.

Already did that, took it in for a diagnostic and they screwed me too. I had an aftermarket air intake and they said they couldn't get readings that would match up with their stock lude numbers. Also, a hose was busted on it. So basically they only told me I had an airflow problem but not how to fix it. They didn't give me anymore info, and it cost me $100 for that. They said to replace the intake and come back. I did replace the intake with a stock one, however, so now my intake is good. The check engine light doesn't work, so that needs to be replaced first to get an error code. I don't want to go there and have them tell me I need that light, which is something I already know. For right now, I'm going to take it back to the last guy who worked on it, have him put back in the old valve he replaced and get it back to the way it was before - over revving, but safe, and idle would return to normal after the car warmed up. He's supposedly a honda specialist. But, he did give me a really good diagnostic, and only for $50, and pointed out things to me that the dealership didn't. He replaced the ignition coil and my spark plug wires and the car ran better, it truly did. But when he replaced the IAC Valve he fucked it up So I'm thinking I'll have him return it to the way it was before and maybe get my check engine light working. Then, I'll most likely take it to another honda specialist.
Gay.

I've never worked on Honda's, but this sounds like a faulty sensor... most likely a coolant temperature sensor or air flow sensor, a vacuum leak or a faulty valve. Could be a very easy fix.

He probably didn't f*** it up. The vavle was most likely bad if he replaced it. However, if something else in the air flow system is faulty then the valve could have just made the underlying problem worse.
If you want something done right, do it yourself.
Search for a respected Honda tech forum and explain to the members your problem and they'll help diagnose it and have you look around the engine at certain things and in the end they might just be able to help you fix it. List your location too. I'm on a VW forum and back when I knew nothing of engines there were more than enough people willing to make the drive to come help me fix the problem.
Just a suggestion. I don't trust mechanics with my vehicle.

You said it! Yet another reason I always buy older model domestic cars, 4 Ford Exploders in a row never a problem other then the fucking doors, every one of mine has been sold with broken rear doors.

They must not be good cars if you have needed to replace them 3 times. How long did you have them?

Hahah no I never replaced any of them, just sold em before they got to be trouble makers. I had a couple for two years I just sold one that I bought 5 years ago and the one I have now weve had for about 2 years now and will have it for many more, it's the newest truck I have ever owned being a flashy new 97' lol.
Cool well that's good hopefully the re-repair is better then the repair.

I doubt it's going to be fully fixed, at best put back to its' old condition. Honestly I think I'd have to ship the car to Japan to the godhead of Honda to get it fixed

If the problem isn't fixed I highly suggest talking to some Honda techs on a forum. It shouldn't be a difficult fix, I could probably even fix it for you after some tinkering around and searching the interwebz.

Thanks, Fox, I appreciate it. I talked to the mechanic today and he replaced the IAC valve and took my cruise control light and put it into the check engine light socket He charged me $100 for that. He said the light gave him 3 error codes, one to do with the IAC valve and 2 others I'm not sure of, I was working and didn't have time to write down what he said. I was pissed he charged me so I told him I'm never bringing my car back there again. Seems like the guy who "rebuilt" the engine screwed me, too, how are you not gonna know that the check engine light is out if you're a mechanic AND working on the engine? That's fucked up.
My next course of action is taking it to autozone and having my friend give me the error codes, he says he'll hook me up. Then, I'm going to do as you suggested and post the results on a honda tech site and talk to you (thanks) and my friends who know a little about cars. I want any future parts that I need to be bought by me, online, at a good price and not be overcharged by a mechanic. Then, unfortunately, I'm going to have to go to another repair shop to have them installed.
