Well depending on how this guy grades I think I may have done alright on that test today. He's the head of the psych. department so it's really kind of up in the air

totally agree with you FB. my us-history class is socratic and discussion-based with no tests. We barely use the book, i like it much better that way its far more engaging.

Right on. I had a class called the history and evolution of human food. twas taught by a guy who got his undergrad at harvard, a phd from stanford, and did a NATO post doctoral fellowship in Germany. He is the dean at the honors college at ASU, anyway that was one of my first classes over there and it was amazing. There were a dozen or so people in the class. The professor never gave a lecture. The students were responsible for reading the material and one person read a bit more and the students gave the lecture. This really facilitated an open discussion. A lot of the shit was way over my head but the discussions really helped me gain an understanding of the material. I really really liked that style of class.

I'm getting my ass handed to me in college algebra.
Which is sad because I'm great in math, but this teacher is by far the worst math teacher I have ever had... ok second worst. The worst was the assistant wrestling coach at my HS. But still pretty horrible, no teaching or lecture. All just "what did you guys have problems with" but he has no discussion over the problems people couldn't do. He just does them, he doesn't define properties or tell us equations. I'm dropping the class to retake it with a different teacher. After I told my coach that I hated my teacher she responded with "I let you take a class with him?" I just can't risk having a bad teacher in algebra. Especially since I am going to be a chemistry major + certified to teach HS in Kansas.
I love lecture, especially with power point. Print them off 3 to a page, and they come with a section to take notes on next to the slide.

But on the issue of study habits.
If they have power points; print them off 3 to a page. Take notes next to the slides, some of them wont be used for notes, but those are usually the slides with pictures/graphs so just take note of them.
Harry said to not put off to last minute, and it it the best advise. Also, don't be like me last spring and skip all your classes for a month. Having to work your ass off to regain scholarship/financial aid sucks. Last semestor I got a 3.4 though, with a D in general psych (I skiped this class to much+no powerpoint)
I hate to say powerpoints are so important, but to me printing them off 3 to a slide is really the best notes I could ever take. I write in shorthand anyway so I don't mind them essentially being an outline of the book/chapter/section

Good point man! I used to do that too. Depending on the lecturer. Sometimes all professors do is read shit from the slides word for word, no need to even go to those lectures. but those are usually good to study from. we also used blackboard. it was kinda cool. There were discussions online that supplement the in-class work. you'll get what you put into school. unless you're a complete dumbass.

I haven't had a word for word teacher yet. In fact this is the first teacher in college that I consider just plain bad. I mean my psych teacher last semester was bad, but for people that can handle his class I am sure it is great. If I were there everyday I would of probably gotten a high C or a B. He was horribly dry though, and talked about his cat a lot. He also told us about a time he had a peyote bud when he lived in denver.
