Why would you multiply it by 8?

Okay there's 4 mountains that are each 14 000 feet tall.
You climb up, you climb down.... 4 multiplied by 2 = 8
14 000 feet x 8 = 21 miles.

Yeah koons, it's hard as fuck to summit one of those fuckers for sure.
not quite 21 miles though, the base of our 14ers isn't at sealevel, the trailhead is usually around 8-9k feet. Regardless though it's not a vertical climb, every vertical mile takes on average 2-3 linear miles because the trails switchback at the lower altitudes in the trees.
it takes a hell of a lot of endurance though, not just because of the altitude gain/loss, but because breathing at 13,000 feet is fucking hard! taking 4 steps on perfectly level ground takes the wind out of you

Wouldn't it be more than 21 miles if you're traveling 2-3 miles per every vertical mile? 21 miles is just the vertical distance assuming each mountain is actually 14 000 feet high and you climb to the top and down in a straight line :P

yeah but you missed the part where it's only about 1-1.5 vertical miles from bottom to summit. These mountains were also linked by a shoulder. the whole roundtrip was 18 miles because you could do the mountains in a loop

But yes Koons, I try to stay healthy. I've always been energetic which lead to me becoming athletic to burn off some of my energy and since then I just can't get enough doing shit outdoors. plus I can't sit still anyway so I might as well go do stuff with my energy right?
