Homebox S for Vegging Questions
    #361964 - 02/10/10 08:40 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I just ordered a Homebox S grow tent last night, I'm just going to use it for vegging, then I'll either buy another Homebox for flowering or just move them outside when the time comes. (Remember I'm starting an industrial hemp tree and a tall sativa tree this year, I'm so excited!).

But anyway, my question is this: are T5's worth the price for clones, mothers, and vegging or will normal fluorescent lights be just fine? Also, I'm going to have the tent in a huge, cold outbuilding shop; am I going to need a ventilation system in the tent or is that just for flowering.

Thanks a lot!

You will want adequate ventilation for all stages of growth.

From the looks of the size of that grow tent, I would personally prefer a t-5 setup purely because you have a lot of space to fill.  T-5 puts out more lumens per watt compared to the t-8 and t-12's, but also puts out more heat and is a bit pricier.

Now to contradict myself, all of my clones and mothers that stay in vegetative are under t-12's.  I like them.  They're cheap, they work great, as well as produce a very small amount of heat.

Hope that helped.

Heh, nothin' more important than that. Besides watering or trimming maybe lol.

So you would say absolutely not to normal fluorescent lights? I'm tempted because they're only like 20 bucks, even though money really isn't a problem.

Oh I wasn't saying that at all.  Regular t-12 flouros work great.  I would get at least 4-6 of em in there if you can fit em.  Remember the more light the better.

I haven't done a lot of research into CFLs, whats the downlow on those copared to normal tube ones?

Well I dont have a lot of experience with T5's but you could put CFLs all around your plant and it would get light into areas that a tube might not be able to get to.

Hmm good point, you guys have got my mind reeling. If I don't do CFLs I could just run some tubes along the sides of the tent as well as above. Or better yet, I could do a combo of both.

Thanks a lot guys!

A combo might work well, because of the different spectrums of light you get.

I would recommend a 250w or 400w MH HID light for vegetative growth. It seems silly that you're getting a grow tent and your going to grow with floros, even if this tent is just for vegging.

And yes, like everyone else here has said - your going to need ventilation no matter what.

Cool. Thank you so much for all the help, guys. The only other thing is I'm going to be growing an industrial hemp female and a tall sativa. If I train those while I'm vegging them, will they spring back up and grow tall once I move them outside?

If a 250w HID isn't' too ridiculously expensive I'll go with that along with some supplementary tubes or CFLS. I've also got a 400-600w HPS I have to think about later if I decide to flower indoors.

They are gonna grow tall no matter where you grow them lol. But I dont think they are gonna spring back up. It will just follow the direction of the light and grow upwards from there. Dont quote me on that though.

Well for the hemp plant and the tall sativa I'll just veg it indo until it starts to get too big for the tent then I'll harden it off and move it outdoors.

I will cream my jeans if the hemp plant gets tall/strong enough to climb lol.

Ornamental value mostly, I'm legal so the pigs can't do anything about it. Basically I wanna grow a pot tree. Once it dies or the year is up or whatever I might try to make some rough fiber or some very rough paper, or maybe even some hemp oil. I'm going to plant a female, but I'll have to watch that it doesn't go hermaphroditic on me and pollinates the entire North Coast crop with industrial hemp pollen lol.

And the reason for growing a high-THC sativa tree is self-explanatory, hehe.
