First Indoor Grow
    #351738 - 01/22/10 12:23 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Ive decided to give my brother a hand with his first indoor grow and figured I would document it here and ask questions as he runs into any problems

Today I went to his place and we finished building the closet which is 4'x 2'x 6'

There are maybe 12 seedlings that made it and will be placed under the light starting some time this weekend

I will post updates and pictures as I get the chance. I appreciate any tips and suggestions

Here is the closet with a nifty heavy plastic sheet door:

Here are the seedlings in dixie cups before he placed them in the closet:

keep us updated, I will be following this thread.

What are the seeds? Looks like two different crosses.

You said you built that cab? how? it looks pre-fabricated. WHat kind of sheeting is that, that you use for the door?

Good luck to you and your brother.

What kinda of light are you using?  You may want to move it a little closer.  They are stretching pretty bad.

Built the cabinet out of 4'x'8 particle board

The door was made out of 3.5mil thick painters plastic. There are actually 3 layers. Without the light in it, the closet actually doubles as a glove box as well :crazy2:

The seedlings will be moved until the light today, the light should be setup today

The light is a 400w Galaxy digital balast with both HPS and MH bulbs

Strain is AK47 x Sour Diesel

Looks good.

Particle board will mold if not covered with some thick plastic. So watch out. plus it's heavy.

I can't wait to see some AK47 x Sour Diesel:)

Damn! Them some skinny bitches mang.  So your grow room doubles as a glovebox?! Whats your ventilation look like? Running a 400w in that space is gonna need air flow.

The inside is coated with sealer/ primer, white reflective paint

The light hasnt even been mounted yet, those were just pictures of the seedlings. They havent even opened their first set of leaves yet

Ventilation will be an air duct of some sort and a fan inside the grow closet to keep constant air flow

Pictures of the finished closet will come when I get a chance to get back over to my bros place

Yeah but my seedlings are at ground level when they open their first set.

You either left the seed shell on or don't have enough light.  Those are going to need some assistance with heavy leaves up top.

Just some thoughts to ponder for ya

My advice would be to start over and keep a light on them BEFORE they pop the soil surface. Ideally they should look like THIS. The pic is after 2 days above the soil.

So they should have been germinated inside the growing closet under the 400w light?

We'll see how they do after a week under the new light, if they dont start to improve then I will start back over

Im not sure how many seeds he has though

400W is to much waste for tiny seedlings. My advice to start them under some CFL's and then turn the 400 on when they're about 2 weeks old. Personally, I use Overdriven 4ft. shop lights. That's what you see mine under in the picture. You can see that the tray in the back is elevated so they are about 1 inch from the bulbs. Those other two trays sit right beside it but I pulled them to the front for a pic.

Ah, I see. So I should have either germinated them under no light at all, just normal room lighting OR under weak bulbs with the bulbs close to the seedlings

OK, I will probably have him scrap the skinny long seedlings and start over.

He might germinate them under the 400w just because I dont know what other space he would use to do it

Thanks for the tips. We are both hoping this first grow is a success. I am heading to home depot in a bit to pick up a fan, light timer, air duct, and a couple other goods

If you're not too concerned about wasting a little power than YES, absolutely start them under the 400. Now just to clarify, when you germinate use the paper towel method. Put them in a covered bowl, BETWEEN wet paper towels, in a warm spot. As soon as you see a taproot plant them in the soil (taproot down obviously) about 1/2" down. Then put them under the light right away. Keep the light about 1-1.5 feet away. You'll be much happier the results.

Here are new pictures from today. Im going to add a black sheet to the front to cut down on the amount of light getting out

Only concern is the light burning either the wall or the plastic. It is touching both. More worried about the plastic obviously. Im testing it out now

Is the bulb touching the plastic? If not you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have good air flow. Nice little setup none the less.

My brother picked out and bought the light

We still need to build a carbon scrubber but it's pretty much done.

The seedlings have been placed in the closet. We will see if they improve in the next 3-4 days. If not I will start back from at the beginning

Im going to give them a couple of days and if not scrap them.

You don’t need to kill them just because they are long and skanky if you are eventually placing them in a soil pot!

Just re-pot them in a little larger of a pot and fill the soil to about an inch or two from the first leaves.

Good luck

I am going to wait on some more feedback and if not then that might be the way to go

If he decides to just plant a new batch of seeds, could germinate them in the same pots that he intends to grow them in?

Do not waste those seedlings. Like Mushroom man said just fill it in when you transplant. It will actually make a stronger root system. Roots form on the covered stem. Watch your humidity and water because rot is a con for this method but i have had only 1 seed die of rot out of literally hundreds.
I do all my plants like this when growing from seed.

Yeah like they said.  For now put just a little more soil in there to nearly the top of the cup to give the stem a  little more sturdiness and the fan should harden it up until you do your transplant and bury the stem.

Personally I LIGHTLY scrape the stem w/ a knife blade perpendicular to the stem where it will be buried and brush rooting powder on, but that's not necessary, it just improves the amount of new roots.

Make sure not to water them until the soil is nearly dry.  Overwatering is the main cause of SSDS (Sudden Seedling Death Syndrome)

Yes, I did just make that up on the spot, but seriously, most people over water and it will kill a seedling in no time.  I'll help you out more later, i'm just so fucking high I can't even keep my eyes open.  Peace

Now that I'm sober I have to agree with Inverted, Smoke and of course MushMan. Just plant them deeper. I totally overlooked this technique last night in my drunken stupor. Definitely DON'T start over. I'm kicking myself for even saying that now.

The seedlings all died. Not sure if it was from the transplant, maybe over watering, or maybe the move into the grow closet was too intense

Anyways new seeds have been placed in jiffy pots. I raised the light up a bit. Hopefully they sprout and hold up better than the first round

If not its back to the drawing board.

Please, everyone bow there heads in silence, we have lost children today.

It is a real shame about those seedlings...

At least, you have more experience under your belt and that should make this second run a lot smoother.

My brother isnt the smartest dude. I think the closet might not be getting enough fresh air or something

He runs a fan 24/7 (box fan) and then just has a 4''x4'' square cut at the top where the air duct fits in

I think he's going to try germinating the rest of the seeds and if those dont work it will be back to the drawing board
