What should I do here?
    #343825 - 01/09/10 01:12 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I have a 550GPH water pump, a 25 gallon rubbermaid roughneck tub and a couple random pvc fittings for attaching to the pump, and some 360 aero misters. I WAS going to build an aeroponic setup, but I can't find the square vinyl posts ANYWHERE around here (I've spent about 20 hours over the last 3 days looking :nonono:).

So what should I do that will be simple(ish), not too much more money invested, and grows amazing weed?

I'm thinking about building an oversized one of these but to be honest I don't really like how much vertical space it takes up. I was planning on growing my Pineapple express in my aero system because it's by far the most aggressive strain I have, but it's also very lanky meaning it would be awful in a system with 3' of space under the rootball :frown:

any good suggestions?

oh and I should mention, I'm planning on installing this in HALF of my grow room, so a 2x4 area.

my goal here is to maximize yield per square foot grow space, but I'm also attempting to stay within the legal guidelines of colorado, so I'm going to be growing these plants somewhat large-ish too. hence why I'm concerned about the PE lankiness. if I could have 75 plants I would just flower a ton of tiny clones and call it good

Plus with how close the plants are to each other in the one you are thinking of making you can't do much more then root clones in it.

Something more like this

well I'm gonna only put about 4-5 plant sites in the tub so the spacing won't be an issue really.

I've thought about doing what you show there but I feel that reservoir takes up a LOT of precious grow space. this 4x4 closet is pretty much all the room I have to use so I don't want to waste it with a tub.

True that res would take up a lot of space. Thing is you don't need that big a res for the amount of plants your thinking about. You could use a 15 gallon one.

hmm.... this is the tub I've got   do you think I should maybe have one or two of those as the "root" area with the misters and then get a smaller res? or should I get a smaller res and still do the ebb and flow like you're showing?

I wonder if I can find a waterproof container that holds 15 gallons and is only like a foot tall....

You would only need one for rooting. The rest is up to you cause it comes down to which style of hydro growing you like. Myself I'm a flood and drain person.

if you can't find the fence posts what about a large diameter PVC pipe?

I'm also partially concerned about the possibility of roots getting caught in the drain. I tend to grow my plants a little larger (I'm limited by my med card for number of plants, so I need them big to maximize efficiency) so I don't want to clog my system with huge roots.

Magash, what are the advantages of flood and drain? I was also considering just building an entire table 2x4 feet with about a foot of hydroton. would it work to have 4-6 plants with interlocking roots in a flood and drain setup?

I've just always been a big fan of flood and drain cause it gives the roots something to hold onto. I've never been a huge fan of keeping the roots in water all the time. With flood and drain you also get good air exchange cause as the the water fills and empties it pushes out the air in the rocks and as it drains it pulls in new air.

I'm in the same boat I stopped SOG grow and went to larger plants to keep the numbers down and 2.5 gallon buckets seem to be big enough to handle some huge plants.

You can also do the table idea that would work fine. With all the root space the plants could get massive so I'd veg em a while and tie em down or do a scrog. Wouldn't matter if the roots got all mixed up.

have you or any of your friends ever done a comparison for Aero vs flood and drain? I'm curious if the gain in yield is worth the extra investment. I'm also kind of a nerd so aero really interests me but I'm not sure if I want to deal with the hassle of clogged sprayers etc...

thanks a TON for your time on this

what about the aero system interests you so much?  Is it just the delivery method of the feedings?

To me hydro is hydro, your setup should reflect the time and effort you want to put into it coupled with the space you have to grow in.  Each method has it's pros and cons for sure, but in the end they all do the same thing just in a slightly different way.

I'm a rocket scientist man  something about growing with the same system that NASA installed on the ISS gives me a chubby lol

from what I know about soil physiology the energy plants will save by not having to search the soil for food should translate into faster growth for aero. even in a flood and drain they have to drive roots through the medium and are only in direct contact with the solution for about 15% of the time, but with aero it's non stop contact with highly oxygenated nutrient solution.

lol No, I can definitely understand that.  Just didn't know if you had a reason for choosing aero over another method or not.

Do you have any good ideas on how to build a custom table for either ebb and flow or some custom root boxes for aero? that's the part that's still hanging me up on this idea, I could build whatever I need easily from lumber but I have no idea how to waterproof it....

would a 6" high webb and flow tray be enough? I was thinking about making it about 12" high if I made it from scratch but all the pre-made trays are only 6" high... is that enough root depth?

Mag could probably answer that question better then I could.  As for making a wooden box water proof you could glue some black and white poly, or some vinyl siding used in pools for example, to the wood.  Then caulk your joints with some silicone sealant for added protection.  I would be wary of using wood though as an unidentified leak could ruin your setup (warping, cracking, bloating of the wood), and lead to a potentially hazardous situation (not likely but flood + HID + Electricity = baaaad news).
