I bought an EC METER!
    #328486 - 12/08/09 12:49 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

God these things cost a pretty penny! I paid more for this little plastic box than my 400 watt HPS!

Now how do I use it?

I mean like, I know how to take a measurement, how to calibrate it and all that stuff. However, what is a good EC and what is a bad EC? How do I know if the nutrient solution is a little short/over on a specific nutrient?

damn, i got my pen meter for like $20-30 bucks and it's always worked perfectly for over a year.  A good place to start looking for your answers would be reading the manual that came with it.  The meter will tell you what the ec is, you can convert that to TDS if need be.  again, i think your manual would have that as well.

They had cheaper ones but I had my eyes set on this. Probably a bit of a stupid buy. They certainly had nothing as cheap as 20-30€ though. Fuck Europe.

No, I read through the manual that the thing came with before I posted. I'm not that silly. It told me how to assemble, take a measurement, calibrate it, clean it, and replace the battery. It also came with some warentee information. :undecided:

http://www.milwaukeemeters.com.au/SMART%20PORTABLE%20METERS/sm302.htm you can check out a PDF of the manual yourself if you like.

I searched on google for a little while but didn't really find anything that gave me numbers per say.
Just stuff that told me what it's used for, how it works and stuff like that. I imagine it's because you get different readings from different hydroponic nutrients.

--EDIT--

I noticed it does give me the conversion factor (0.5) for converting to the SM401 & SM402 which are both TDS meters. I'm guessing that means that to convert EC to TDS I have multiply my results by .5

I don't know if that helps you guys at all at answering my question.

What's a good PPM then? How can you tell if your solution is deficient/heavy in a nutrient by using the reading? I'm guessing you can't really - it's just to measure potency yeah?

Anyone, what's a good ppm? Or EC?

I believe plants thrive around 1400ppm

The PPM's you use will be dependent upon the nutrients you chose to use.  I use FloraNova Grow and Bloom and they have the recommended dosages on the bottle.  Typically during the seedling stage you wont use nutes then a week or so in you will add nutes to your feedings and gradually increase it to full strength.  I tried to peak out the PPM's in flower, but I AM novice at all this with only 2 grows under my belt.  Magash or Dr. S would be better equipped to better address that issue.  But ultimately it depends on your nutrients.  I would think that all the nutrients (good ones) would include some kind of recommendation about the dosage/conversion factors.  I went up to 1300 ppm on my grows if that means anything to you.

I got it from my local hydro store.  It's a tds meter, not EC.  if that matters to ya.  I know i've posted a picture of it with info on where to get it online before.  maybe somewhere in the 20 pages of my two logs.  Actually, here's a link!

PPM is a system to measure the strength of your nutrients....bigger more aggressive flowering plants will need a stronger nutrient concentration to thrive to their full potential more than a small vegging plant would need.......people run anywhere up to 2000 PPMs but just at least try to keep it in 500-1500....and of course get them low for flushing .........good PPM levels depend on different circumstances, stages of growth etc....  start out low and increase the strength  relevant to your nutrient chart/schedule throught the plants life cycle.... remember its at least better if it goes low than too high so definately make sure it doesnt get to strong or your plants will get damged.........topping off is a must to control these levels.........if its too high then dilute the slution with water, if its too low then add more nutes ....

Can be dropped and won't get fucked up. Never needs to be calibrated.
