Sungazers claim their eyes are capable of converting sunlight into energy for their bodies. They claim the methodology is similar to photosynthesis. There is no biological basis for this claim, as the human body has no means to convert sunlight into a form of energy that it can use as fuel and no chlorophyll or similar molecule is present in the eyes.[citation needed]

Sungazing is also part of the Bates method, an alternative therapy intended to improve eyesight. Ophthalmologists do not regard the method as useful.
