I plan on growing probably 6 to maybe 8 plants in a large shop near my house. I was going to buy a 1000w lamp, but someone told me I could grow like 12 plants or something under a 1000w.
Money isn't an issue, but would it be smarter to get a smaller lamp for less heat? If so, what wattage?

Depends on floor area, and height you wish.
With the right strains you could easily grow 12 plants around 3 foot tall under a 1000watt in a 4 x 4 room.

nope, thats too much light for babies; you coud get by with even just florescents for them in veg, i just got a t5 myyself, but use that 1000w hps for flower. boom baby

Thanks 1144425, I was trying to keep costs down by avoiding a florescent, but I just did some research and found out they're hella cheap. I guess CFLs are almost as good as T5 but also almost as expensive.
