Mylar survival bags... ?
    #304595 - 10/27/09 08:20 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone heard of or tried this?  I mentioned my cab plans to my girlfriend and she was like "What about those survival bags? Aren't they made of Mylar?"

Why, yes they are dear...

Not a bad idea at all, verrry cheap way to get mylar; another good idea like that is dollar store wrapping "paper", many of the plastic kind are actually mylar with printing on one side.

The only downside to this kind of mylar is how thin it is. Mylar made to be hung on walls and the like is usually a good deal thicker so that it is less prone to tears and wrinkles but if you are careful, that is irrelevant.

On the other hand, cheap mylar is easier (on the wallet) to replace and if you've ever tried to clean mylar, you will know how easy it is to dull the finish which warrants replacement despite how expensive/thick the maylar you chose.

Survival bags are certainly used as a cheap alternative to Mylar and you will find they work fine.  Just cheap, like Doc said, just like the dollar store crap...but sometimes cheap is good.

However "flat white" surfaces are still the best choice when dealing with light and surface absorption/reflection.

Mirrors, tin foil, aluminum foil etc = TeH SuK period.
