Help Identify Flowering Plant?
    #299700 - 10/18/09 03:49 PM (15 years, 30 days ago)

Anyone seen or know what this flowering plant is? I have been grwoing them for 2 years now and have no clue what they are. They have a soft stalk and branches, Not woody. Produce pink flowers like pictured. Seed pods are conical and auto eject seeds upon touch or pressure to the pods. They are grown in tropical conditions, low altitude.

I've got a bunch in my yard!

I usually just point at them and say "that plant"

  I have been saying the same thing! But a few people have asked me what they were the past couple weeks, so figured i would ask around and find the identity of this mystery plant.

But if you too have them growing in your local then i am guessing they are not a tropical flower. Thanks for the info Harry! I can broaden my search for more then tropical plants!

I have thought they look kinda like an orchid and so had the last person who asked me what they were. Orchids are a big thing here and have seen many varieties of them but nothing with soft (non woody) stems and branches. But thanks for the input too Furrowed!

Do they smell good? I think I have seen them before. But they smell really sweet if they are the ones I'm thinking of.

They have kinda a sweet smell. But not to much of a smell at all.

Seed pods are the neatest thing and quite scary if your not expecting it! I picked like 4 of the seed pods, cutting the pods stem from the branches. Once in my had, I gently closed it over the pods to bring them into the house and get the seeds out of them. Well, soon as i closed my hand they all popped open! They have this cool little spring loaded pod to scatter the seeds i guess and as a defense I suppose to guarantee propagation. But when your totally not expecting it and they pop like that it freaks a person out brah!! Felt like a bug or something trying to get out of your hand!

The pods are thin green "paper lantern" looking. With a bunch of tiny tiger striped seeds, kinda look like miniature cannabis seeds. They seem to bloom all year here with fall being pretty much the end of their life cycles. The plants themselves grow anywhere from a foot tall (give or take a few inches) to 3 foot tall (again, give or take). When we started renting this place they were ugly, scruffy looking weeds with perty pink flowers. So i tuned up the soil a bit and started feeding them regularly and they ended up about waste high. The more room they have obviously too the bigger around the become aswell. The stalks and branches though i swear are like 90% water. They are soft and reddish to green in color. The seeds are very fertile! They if left to nature, seedling pop up about 3 days after pods pop seeds to the soil. Kids found them fun to have pop and had seedling growing all over our front yard. They seem to be very strong and vigorous plants!

All of the statements and posts I make or have made are fake. I just found all the pictures and copied and pasted them here. I am in no way associated with any of the materials discussed here. I'm just bored, and lame.

I am really trying to think back to the natural sciences classes that I had.  A large portion of the class was geared toward being able to identify any plant by their leaf structure and other characteristics.  You can go to a book store and look through a field guide of plants native to HI.  just another suggestion.  if you really want to know take some upclose pics of various parts of the plant and post them on a website for that kind of shit.  Maybe you'll find out that it cures all sorts of ailments or something.

I came across a forum yesterday which is geared towards identifying tropical flowers and plants. Am not too sure that they are a naive plant, being Harry said he has the same flowers and you know his local.

i figured i would post them here first and see what my growery friends could come up with. But will probly go back out and get some close ups and post them on that other site soon.

But thanks for all the help guys!!
