Tips of leaves dying off

I had a bonsai plant for a while but it started to stink and neighbors in my apartment started to ask questions, so I gave it to a friend who is in a less risky situation. He texted me the other day saying the tips of the leaves are starting to go brown so I went over and took a look. It turns out not all of the leaves are going brown, only a few are. I clipped the browning ends of the leaves off and told him to keep doing that.
Any ideas what's causing that? Lack of light? Lack of nutrients?
He doesn't have a great grow light. He's using a 100w equiv. screw-in compact fluorescent bulb. It's in Scott's potting soil, 6 inch pot. I had been fertilizing it with Miracle Grow every other week and it worked FANTASTIC. He's had it for about 3 weeks and hasn't been doing that. Do you think it's a nutrient deficiency?
Yeah yeah, I know, he should upgrade the lighting. Not in the dude's budget or mine, we're poor college students. This is just a "pet project" of sorts. If we end up with an ounce I'd be amazed.
And advice would be appreciated.

leaf tip burn is a sign of nutrient burn. Judging from your choice in fertilizers I'd put money on that being the problem.

I see the words "Miracle" and "Gro" and I can almost always stop right there and diagnose the problem.

Advice:
Step one: Stay out of any situations that would cause your neighbors to "ask questions" Step two: Get a job Step three: buy this http://www.homedepot.com/Lighting-Fans-Security-Flood-Lighting/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5Zaqp5/R-100010739/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
you still wont get an ounce.

Yeah, I had a feeling you guys would say the MiracleGrow was a bad idea.
SmOakland: I have a job but my money goes to paying rent, food, and interest on loans. That light isn't very expensive at all though. I'll have to talk to the guy and see if he'd be cool with putting that where he's growing.

Alright, leaf tips all stopped dying off after I clipped the necrotic part off. So thats good. Now there's another issue... My buddy told me the lower leaves are starting to yellow. I haven't seen it yet, but he said it's the bigger well established leaves toward the bottom of the plant. Any ideas?
I used to keep a really elaborate freshwater planted fish aquarium and from what I remember I had similar problems when K is low. But so far my comparison of aquatic plant care to MJ care has been pretty off.
I did get some good news though... IT'S A GIRL! The newer nodes are starting to put out some pistils.
Also, mods, if you want to move this to the Doctor's Diag forum, feel free.

You might want to throw it on 12/12 if you can see pre-flowers. Especially b/c you have so little light.
