I made cannabutter recently, using some trim and some buds. I used approx. 1/2 oz in 3/4 lbs unsalted butter. It came out potent and delicious.
All you need are:- Large pot
- strainer
- weed (pref. 1oz to 1lb butter ratio)(trim works great)
- Heat proof container large enough to hold the water and butter
- Smaller heat proof jar for refined butter
- Filter (cheesecloth, thin t-shirt or sheet, etc)
First you take a large pot of water, butter and your herb to a simmer. Simmer 1hr. Let cool completely. Bring back to a simmer for another hour.
Once cooled to a warm temp, pour over strainer into a large heat proof container (preferably not a large mouth bowl. A large jar would work best.) Leave vegetable matter sitting in strainer until cooled. Once cooled press through cheesecloth or thin sheet/t-shirt.
Optionally you can pour a cup or two boiling water over the strained veg matter to get out more of the butter and squeeze again.
Let this cool completely, and transfer to fridge. Let sit 24 hours.
It will look something like this (hopefully bigger though)
Once you have let it cool in the fridge, you can break up the butter that has solidified at the top, and transfer that to another more suitably sized container.
**for less watery, more pure butter, you can re-simmer this butter and refridgerate again, separating more water from the butter, which I would recommend, especially if you are baking a recipe that does not call for any water, although it is not necessary).**
The final product will look something like this:
You can see that there is no water in the butter.
Happy cooking!
