Hi
Post your most desired or most useful indoor grow cabinet system here.
I've seen a few on the net but I'm guessing these are the best: http://www.homegrown-hydroponics.com/pcgr3plsthyg.html

Build your own. Made this thing close to 9 years ago. It will cost ya like 25% as much as buying one.

Try checking out some local garage sales. Find cabinets or dressers.
Things you'll need to take into consideration: -ventilation -lights/electrical wiring -odor

Well I have access to a decent sized closet. It has a sliding door and carpeted flooring. If I wanted to just go with that as the space itself, would I need to coat the walls with something?

not the walls, but you're definitely going to want to cover the floor with something. Nutrients are NOT easy to clean

You could paint 'em flat white.
Or put some mylar on all the sides.
But definitely put something on the floor; a tarp; black trash bags; whatever.

are you going to use the entire closet to grow? that length to width ratio is a little unorthodox, but by getting two lower powered lights instead of one high powered lights you can still get nice even growth all along the whole corridor.
What kind of budget are we looking at here?

It is a very odd space (the entrance is two ft wide) so realistically if i'm going to tend to the plants I'd really have about 1' x 6' of actual grow space approx. That way I can walk in there.
Budget is what I'd call a chip-away-at-it budget, a little here and a little there. One part at a time basically. I am concerned about ventilation and aroma.

Budget concerns means DIY carbon scrubber for odor. With so little horizontal space, you may want to work with the vertical space you have. What about back 2'x3' devoted to flowering, closing that off from the rest of the closet (no light leaks) and put up a shelf system 3'x1' and as tall as you want for seedlings, clones, mothers.
Can you vent through ceiling/walls, or will air go through the door?

Dear God,
I could go through with the dimensions mentioned in paragraph one, but I'm confused what you mean with the second paragraph.

As far as air intake/exhaust goes, what are your plans? Is it feasible to drill holes in the ceiling to vent air into the attic? What about between walls? How would you set up your intake vent to bring in cooler, CO2-laden air into the garden?
If you cannot knock holes into your walls or ceiling (which seems likely), you'll have to intake and exhaust through the doorway. Let us know if this is the case, we can discuss further ideas.

This is a rented apt so options are highly limited. Also closet is right next to front door. (And that front door is linked to a hallway of several other apartments).

Ok, well you definitely need to bring cool, fresh air into your room and pump out the warm, stale air. The only way you'll be able to do this is through the door. So, if you plan to use this closet, you need a door you can cut holes in. That might mean buying a door. Get one with an inconspicuous lock. Now it's a utility closet that you can't access, as far as guests are concerned.
Your closet is 112 ft3; you need a fan that can recycle your air at least once every five minutes. With an air-cooled HPS for flowering and a bunch of flouros for veg, there'll be some heat, so you'll have to consider that too. >200 CFM seems wise.
Being close to the front door just means that you need to eliminate all smells coming from your room. Look into DIY carbon filters.

God,
For air purification/cycling can't I just use a couple of ionizers from Walmart/Target and just leave them on high 24x7?

No. Ionization isn't going to get rid of the smell (maybe you're thinking of ozone?), nor will it create new CO2 for the plants to take up. Also doesn't account for cooling the room. You need an air source outside the room, and you must dissipate stale air from the room.
If you can't cut up a door, you'll either have to leave it open more than half the time (seems not optimal for you) or use another enclosure.
Saw this the other day, might be worth a read. He's venting out the attic, but his intake is through the door. The hardest part for you will be getting the air set up so it will vent out the door, and the door will still open. I've been thinking about that, I have a couple ideas. Does the closet door open out or in? I'm assuming out...
