Lighting in a small area????????????
    #282433 - 09/18/09 12:40 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

This is probably a question that has been answered before, but I am going to ask it anyway. I am currently looking at the archives and have found nothing on the subject I'm looking for.

What I want to know is, I'm building an enclosed area, say 4ft wide buy 5ft long and 4ft high. The second will be 4ft wide, 6 or 7 ft long and 4ft high.

I'm trying to find the best lighting possible for the growing area. My problem is with heat. I know that HID lights give off a lot of heat. I also saw that most people don't recommend CFL because do not put out enough Lumens. I found a CFL that is 150 watts and puts out 11,000 Lumens.

I also know that LED's are coming along, but still to early for them to be effective

Any suggestions out there to help me along????????????

I'd say use LEDS in conjunction with some high watt CFLS. There a fellow on here who had a good grow with LED and CFL lighting.

You should read the thread titled "CFLs" in this forum.  There are a few guys that really know thier shit laying it out in that thread.  I learned a lot for a three page thread.

Thanks guys for the help.... Will do more research.

Got that book already. I was under the understanding that the author was trying to grow a plant for cheap. I don't want to do it cheap nor do I want to spend a lot of money either. I'm looking for a middle of the road answer. I'll keep looking.

what's your problem with heat?  The square footage of your grow room is more then adequate for a 400-600 watt HID system.

You have the space for a 1000watt (4x6 or 7) Average 50watts per sq foot. Your gonna need fans no mater what since the plants are gonna need air exchange or a air conditioning system and added co2. If needed and I've done it use the same fans to cool the lights and vent the grow area.

Interesting never thought of it that way Magash. The other reason I didn't want to use HID lights is because they use wattage and the Electric Company would notice this and my bill as well. I have thought about going off the grid so-to-speak. No one will notice a change in what I am doing this way.

Nope, not true at all.  HID light's do not consume a lot of power.  Running a HPS light in your grow room will not bring the cops knocking on your door for power usage.

Running a 1000 watt light 12/12 cost me $54 a month. Have not taken the time to figure the cost of the new 6 inch inline fan yet.
