im going to a festival this weekend and my harvest is comming up the night before i leave and i was going to use the trimmings to make a headie batch of butter to bring up with me. could i use the trimmings from the buds right away? or would i have to dry them then do the butter process?

I think its fine. I have heard people say they freeze their herb first, but my boyfriend says he has done it with fresh herb (non frozen) and it worked out fine, so I'd say go for it, or you can check out the recipe I just posted on cannabutter using fresh herb. http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/285747

I would think that it would taste like a little bit more chlorophyll-y w/o an kind of curing / drying at all. But who cares about taste?

I believe the main concern here is regarding the decarboxylation of the THC acid. Since much of the THC in fresh herb still has its carboxyl group attached, it may not effectively decarboxylate via the butter making processing alone. Note: Decarboxylation takes place naturally during the curing process, as the THC gives off CO2 and water vapor.
Incidentally, I have made ganja butter with fresh herb and it certainly worked - whether or not it could have been improved by first decarboxylating the herb is unknown to me. Since you can easily stick the weed in an oven for 30 minutes at 150 degrees F to decarboxylate, you might as well do that first since it takes hardly any effort.
