Himalayan Gold and White Widow, 2x125W CFL. First Grow! [1 of 2 harvested]

I received my feminized Greenhouse seeds last week. Ordered a mixed bag with 5 color coded seeds. My plan was to grow one plant, since my space is limited, 55x55x160 cm. However, I decided to germinate two seeds, since I figured all might not sprout.
However, four days later my pots looked like this:
I'm growing these in a nutrient low soil for seedlings containing:
55% low humidified peat moss 35% high humidified peat moss 10% sand
Added nutes (g/m^3): Nitrogen: 125 P: 60 K: 135 Mg: 240 Ca: 1800 S: 70 B: 0.3 Cu: 1.1 Fe: 0.8 Mn: 1.4 Mo: 1.8 Zn: 0.4 pH of soil is 5.6 - 6.4
I'm planing to transplant them to the following soil mix later:
60% low humidified peat moss 35% high humidified peat moss 5% sand
which I'll mix with about 10% perlit and maybe some vermeculit(?).
This soil contains the following nuts (g/m^3): Nitrogen: 210 P: 105 K: 225 Ca: 2000 Mg: 250 S: 120 B: 0.7 Cu: 2.8 Fe: 5.9 Mn: 3.6 Mo: 3.3 Zn: 1.6
and should have a pH of 5.6 - 6.4.
I haven't got a pH-meter yet, so I haven't check the pH of my water. But I would guess it's about 7-7.8.
I'll repot in two 11 liters pots, that should just fit in my cabinet.
Day 5
Day 6
I have been having these under one 125W 2700K CFL and one 125W 6400K CFL, but was recommended to unplug the red-spectrum one to lower my temps some (was 28-30 C in there with lights on). So for now they'll be under just the one 125W CFL.
I'm really excited! Maybe a bit too much so, my girlfriend is getting a bit jealous from my shift of attention
[edit] Took some pictures of my setup! Everything is computer controlled. Although I have everything on manual control at the moment (lights on normal timer). I have a usb cable in there too, for connecting a web camera. This way, if I'm on vacation I can monitor and control the whole setup remotely

Best of luck. I have nothing but gut good to say about green house seeds, I'm sure these plants will not let you down.

Give her a look of shock and awe, like this...
Let her know that the first few weeks are critical! That she should think of the seedlings as little, defenseless babies that need your care!
Then give her a look JUST like this,...
.....and say...
.. ... ... .. .. ... ... ... ... ... .. . .. .
. .... ;;;. ... .. .. .. .. What were you just talking about?

Get another cfl in there, it will double your veg. It doesn't need to be 125w. Just divide the wattage into smaller bulbs, the temp will stay cooler dividing the watts into seperate circuits.
The red light is all right for all around sunlight UV's, but is not necassary. The plant in veg only uses the blue light range. Wait until flowering for the hps.
peace

Greenhouse Seed Co. comes highly recommended. They have a very good reputation for acquiring the best strains on the planet. They are very dedicated to traveling the globe and searching for the best old-world strains and landraces. Some examples would be Kush's from the Hindu Kush region and Awesome trippy Sativas from Africa, to the densest Indica around from Alaska. These are just some examples of their ongoing determination to be the best, and it shows.
Anyways it looks like you are doing ok so far. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.
Also, WELCOME TO THE GROWERY!

Thanks for the feedback guys, and thanks for the welcome
I'll see if I can pick up some more CFL to stuff in there. I've got a couple of UV-lights (probably UVA) laying around, maybe I could use them? [edit] Okay, I researched some more and came to the conclusion that the UVA lights are out of the question. Guess I'll have to go buy some more CFLs somewhere.
I think the yellowing/lime greening has reduced some since yestarday
Day 7
Overview of my babies home. Used a couple of CDs to get them close to the light. Finally those CDs are good for something.
I think the HG is looking better today, it is being outgrown by WW though.
This baby is looking really healthy and growing fast(er than the HG)!
I should get my pH-meter next week. I'm a bit concerned with watering them with water of unknown pH.
Also, could someone experienced comment on the growth speed here. It's been a couple of hours from 1 week of growth, and as you can see, the leaf span of the first real leafs is 4-4.5 cm. It feels like they are growing slowly, but then again, it might just be because I look at them like 10 times a day and as they still are babies, a big percentage in increase in size looks smaller to me eye.
I'll switch to a weekly update from now, not too flood this thread with more or less identical pictures
Peace and love!

I couldn't resist updating the log today again WW is growing at an impressive rate, and the limegreenish color on the HG is gone now.
Day 8
HG is not growing much at all, stalled? Maybe the pot is too small? It's about 8cm wide and 8cm tall.
WW has totally stopped growing in height and is putting all energy into the leafs, which has grown over 1cm in a day!
I hope both of these babies are going to fit in my closet.

Day 9 I woke up this morning to check on my babies, and noticed that HG had not grown at all since yesterday. So I decided to transplant her (hopefully) to a bigger pot. I also took the brave decision to transplant her to a more nutrient rich soil.
My theory to why she stopped growing is that the soil, which had a pH of 6.5 initially, got its pH increased because of my probably high pH water. This probably depleted the pH buffer in the small amount of soil (2.5dl), while the WW which has a lot more soil still has a lower pH. So if my theory is correct, WW should stop growing soon too I'll hopefully have that pH-meter before that happens though, and I might even transplant to the final 11 liter pots.
So, here she is in her new pot. Grow baby grow!

I received my pH-meter today and measured my tap water pH, 8.0 - 8.2! So I've now prepared some water with lime concentrate, pH down to 6.4. I hope my soil will level out to around 6.5 in a couple of days, before it hurts the plants.

Day 13 It's been almost two weeks now and my babies are looking healthy!
I transplanted them to 11 liters pots yesterday since the roots were coming out of the bottom of the old pots. I'm amazed how fast the roots grew.
I wish I had another one of them veg.-lights in that empty socket Think I might plug my cfl-flower-lamp in there soon, it has to be better than nothing.
HG has some catch up to do.
WW is doing really well. Time to start LST soon perhaps?

Indeed! I can't wait to see these little girls grow to ladies! I really want to invest in a better system now, HPS and bigger grow room, but because of security issues that's not possible My 125W CFLs will have to do for now.
I really hate these stupid laws, let me grow whatever plants I want, let me do whatever I want with my body and mind - it is not your business Mr. Government!

Day 20 So, it has been one week since last update, and my lovelings are doing great.
A side by side from last week.
I've also installed two CPU-fans to cool down the lights, which now seems to have a peek temperature of 50C (that is on the glass surface of the bulb). They also provide some nice breeze for the plants.

Thanks for all the encouraging words guys! And now for the weekly update!
Day 27 HG has been doing really great and has almost grown to the height of WW. I decided it was time to play some bondage with my plants, and here's the results.
Before
After
Closeups
I'll try to get them even lower in 6 hours when the lights are back on again. They should be a bit more thirsty then, and that will hopefully make it easier not to snap them, which would be tragic to say the least :/

Day 30
They're so bushy you can't see the stem anymore

Day 31 I installed my 2700K light alongside the 6500K today to test run before switching to flowering in a week. Unfortunately it brought up the temperature to around 33 degrees C, ouch!
Day 32 To deal with my temperature problems I did a small redesign of my reflector screen.
This brought the temps down to around 29 degrees C, hurray! Unfortunately at the expense of some reflected light, you can't get it all
I've got a feeling they look shorter and shorter for each picture I post here I'm working hard on the LST.
I noticed that one of the lowest leafs had started yellowing...
...as so.
I'm guessing this is a N deficiency. I haven't feed them anything but plain tap water since the start, since my soil was nutrient enriched. I'm guessing the nutrients are finally depleted. I'll water with fertilizer tomorrow which contains, per 100ml, 7.1g N, 1.5g P and 5.9g K. Will start by using half the recommended dosage to avoid nutrient burn if my N deficiency guess was incorrect. Unless someone can confirm that it's correct, of course
So, as mentioned above, I'm planing to start the flowering phase in a weeks time. Then my plants will be about 6 weeks old, and have been in veg for about 5. I don't want them to get too big, since I don't want a too big yield. Too big of a yield might get me into prison if I were to be busted. Not worth it I'm not a heavy smoker anyways, so anything above 20g will last me a year.
Any advice on that yellowing leaf is appreciated! Both plants show the same thing, and it's isolated to their lowest leaf. I'm 95% sure it's N-def, but then again, it's my first grow so what would I know.
Cheers!

Day 33 It seems my diagnosis was correct! I ended up feeding them with the full nutrient dosage yesterday, and they have grown more in the past 10 hours then they've done the past two days! So now I'm a proud grower, cured my first plant, hurray!

Day 38 Side and top view
I've got alternating nodes!
I'm planing to switch my lights over to 12/12 now since I've got a couple of branches with alternating nodes. I'm a bit unsure though. Should all branches have alternating nodes before switching to 12/12? Will only the branches with alternating nodes develop flowers?
I've taken a couple of macro shots on the nodes in hope someone could help me identify pre-flowers. I'm pretty sure none of these are pre-flowers though.
Pre-flowers or just young leafs?

looks good shro! Regarding the alternating nodes, i've never used that as a guideline on when to flower. I'm in a situation where space is an issue so I judged it based on total plant height.

Thanks for the positive feedback!
Height isn't really an issue for me since I've tied these plants down so much. They are no more then 20 cm over the edge of the pot. I have 1 meter more to play with. Would it be wise to let them veg a bit more?

With CFL bulbs I doubt you will want to use all of your available height due to light penetration issues. The extra time spent in veg may not be worth the extra yield of a bunch of skimpy buds due to poor light penetration.

Day 70 I've got a bug problem! 22 days ago I noticed a small film with a couple of black dots on, on one of the lower leafs. I figured it was residue from fertilizers in the water. Didn't think more about it, until two days ago, when I noticed that there was more, and now on leafs so far up that there was no chance it could have come from watering. Further investigation led me to believe that it was damage caused by thrips. Looked around but couldn't see any movement. The black dots and the silver like patches was enough evidence for me to panic though, so I cooked together a mixture of water, garlic and a couple of habaneros, since I had read that they don't like neither, and I had no access to neem oil. Sprayed both plants throughly and monitored them for a while. A while later I noticed activity on the leafs, small white larvae all over the place. I removed the most affected leafs and crushed all bugs I could see. I've kept this game up since then, spraying and crushing bugs. I've also ordered some neem oil, which will hopefully arrive on Monday. I'll then switch from my garlic&capsaicin spray to neem oil & water, which should hopefully help further.
White Widow is almost unaffected, most likely because it's covered in THC filled trichomes. As I said in my Doctor's Diagnosis thread, I would have made an insecticide out of my plants had I had more than two of them.
I'll update with pictures later tonight, when "the sun" is up

Absolutely great looking cfl grow. I've been more nd more impressed by peoples results with cfl's. Keep up the good work.

Day 78
Unfortunately the White Widow seems to have some sort of deficiency, my guess is Ca deficiency caused by a bit too acidic soil, I'm trying to correct this. If there's one thing I've learned from this grow it's that keeping a stable pH in a premix soil is a daunting task. Next time I'll mix my own soil and pH buffer it accordingly, or I'll go for a hydroponic system.
The thrips war continues, but it seems I have the upper hand now, possessing the almighty weapon of neem oil and all!

Day 86 I've been fighting the thrips for a while now, and it seems they don't care about the neem oil, but my combination of garlic and capsaicin keeps them away for a while. I also covered the soil surface with aluminum too keep them from hiding in there.
The calcium deficiency in White Widow worsened a lot, so I decided to flush the plant and then water it with dolomite. It seems to have fixed the problem. They're entering week 7 of flowering now, unfortunately I think I'm going to have too flower for at least another 2-3 weeks, since they've both been stalled for about a week or two.
Himalayan Gold is densing up, but there's very few trichomes on it, at least compared to the frosty looking widow. They've started to form the last week though, so hopefully it will be frosty too come harvest!
Now for some pictures

Day 97 Girls have been flowering for 8 weeks now. I think I'll harvest White Widow next week, Himalayan Gold is really light on the thrichs though, so she'll have to wait two or three weeks more.
Here are a couple of macro shots of White Window!

They are very dedicated to traveling the globe and searching for the best old-world strains and landraces. These are just some examples of their ongoing determination to be the best, and it shows.
Wow, thanks for the information and recommendation. I like the idea of having my own small collection of good sativas some day. Though i have access to sour diesel currently which happens to be one of my faves, not quite the same, but sooo good.

they'll be under just the one 125W CFL.
Wait until flowering for the hps.
peace
I didn't know this....so if iam using say some compact fluorescent lamps and a fluorescent fixture I want to only have in blue spectrum bulbs during veg? even if i have a few fixtures? ~P~

No it's not necessary, there is obviously some blue light emitted from soft white bulbs.
I vegged for 25 days under (6) Red Spectrum CFL's and managed to get some of the shortest, bushiest plants yet, and i'm mainly an OD grower.
I plan to see some pretty dense nugs from the all red cfl's, but i'm also adding either a 150 or 250w HPS to penetrate the canopy better, even though I'm doing a mini-SOG of sorts, so penetration isn't exactly necessary, as the majority of buds will all be at one level easily able to soak up most of the light.
Looking Great Shro! I like those bulbs and might invest in some for Vegging in the next grow. You really can't beat Fluoro's for vegging, unless you have a MH... Even then I've seen closer internodal spacing in my CFL vegged than in the MH vegged...

Day 121
I haven't had much time to update this journal in a while, not too much have happened anyways. The plants are now in week 11.5 of flowering, so they are about 2 weeks over due, probably because they got stalled because of thrips and too acidic soil. I think I've got everything back on track now though, so I'm looking forward to a harvest in another week or two.

Day 135 Harvested White Widow today, 90% milky 10% amber. Himalayan Gold still needs a couple of weeks I'm afraid. It's progressing really slowly. I don't know how much this might be dried, but I'm guessing no more than 20g. Anyone wanna make a guess?

I'd say your guess is right on... Looks like you had a nutrient/PH problem when you were nearing the end. They should have plumped up more than that. I have suffered the same exact problem. Better nutrients also made a big difference..
Nice job for a first grow though!
Have fun smoking your own bud, nothing better than that.

Slightly under 40g dried. I'm pleasantly surprised It might even end up to be a bit over 40g once curing is done since the buds got a bit too try because of the low humidity (<20%). I'll probably have to add a couple of orange peels to my jar to up the moisture levels some I guess(?)
Oh, and I have of course smoke some and it smoked great. Very mindy energetic high and taste was subtle and fruity. I'm hoping the flavors will develop more during curing.
Looking forward to harvest the Himalayan Gold, the buds look much denser and it smells great!

Day 149 Himalayan Gold is densing up really nice, she sure is taking her time though.
Here is the result of the White Widow
I'm having a hard time curing it though, since the air is so dry. Anyone have any suggestions? I through in a couple of orange peels from time to time, but as soon as I've left the lid open for a couple of hours, they dry out to an almost crispy state Is it even any point continue curing once they have been crispy dry?

A tad crispy is ok. Put the bud in the jar, seal it and the moisture from inside the bud will re-moisten the outer crispy layer. Check the buds every 12 hours. If it regains moisture leave the lid off for a little bit to dry the outer layer. Repeat this over and over until your satisfied the moisture level.
And if need be you can always re-moisten is it's too dry. I've used lettuce and it works pretty good.
Dang man, I wish my first grow looked this good. Right on:)
