Okay so in order to not Hijack the thread "Wow, thats it!" I decided to post this one.
If anyone has any additional information on where the term Marijuana came from Im sure theres a few pwoplw here that would be interested.
Marijuana.
The term marijuana refers to the dried leaves of the cannabis plants and the flowers of female plants.[6] This is the most widely consumed form of cannabis. It contains 3% to 22% THC.[7] In contrast, cannabis strains used to produce industrial hemp contain less than 1% THC. [8]

The origin of the word marijuana is not known but it appears to be the Spanish name for Maria and Juana (Mary and Jane). The drug slang for marijuana includes such names as Mary Jane, pot, grass, tea, reefer (as a cigarette), and weed. In India it is called ghanja, dagga in South Africa, and Kef in Morocco. The potency of the psychoactive cannabinoids found in a marijuana plant varies depending on the locale from which the plant was derived and its genetic makeup.

I prefer to call it cannabis. The government just started calling it marijuana so they could convince idiots that evil Mexicans were trying to corrupt their children. I figure why let them dictate terms.

I didn't see this until now. My understanding of the origin of the word is basically what mel said in that thread u mentioned. the Anslinger clan perpetuated the name and stigmatized it to associate it with the mexicans. Because when they smoked it they went crazy and the mexi's would look twice at our white women, and maybe do something because they were crazy on this mexican marihuana. I mean it really is ironic that this is almost fundamentally why the drug is illegal now. And yet, in Mexico now the drug cartel violence is helping the anti-prohibition cause. Just the other day mexico decriminalized small amounts of drugs. Isn't that interesting? And it get's a 15 second mention on CNN, but of course they can't make that fucking connection.
