From what I know, melatonin just helps regulate your "biological rhythm". And from doing so, it allows the user to retain a sleep schedule.
But from my experiences with it last night, I'm convinced its effects are too subtle to render them useful. Although the desired effect, to fall asleep peacefully, failed to occur, there were some slight benefits. It allowed my body to easily succumb to sleepiness with the aid of willpower. It also helped sustain the duration of my REM sleep.
But my experiences might be biased. I ingested it as a mixture of herbal extracts. The melatonin was accompanied by a few other extracts, such as skullcap and hops.
