The initial drying process can vary depending on how dense and thick your colas are, including how well you trimmed the bud.
Step 1 is of course to trim off the excess leafiness, to your taste. Then hang 'em by their stems and use a fan to gently circulate fresh air around them; the force of the wind should not move or sway the colas while they rest.
Now depending on the density of the final product, it may take anywhere from one to several days for the buds to have lost enough moisture to safely stow them in some jars. As a general rule of thumb, it'll be safe to put them into jars when you can easily break the stems with your fingers. If it's soft and bendy, let it dry a while longer.
Once you have them in canning jars - remember not to pack the jars too tightly! - keep them in a cool dark area and vent the jars by opening the lids and agitating the air in the jar. Venting should be performed at least once every twelve hours for the first week. After that, vent the jars daily for at least another two weeks.
Within one to two months from harvest, the buds will have matured into their prime smokeable state.
