Questions w/pic

Planted a very young seedling outside over a month ago and it has barely grown. It appeared to be dying and I attribute this to planting it in basically an all clay area. It was stupid I know but I wasn't THAT serious about it. So I decided to transplant the tiny thing to a place with actual soil and did so a couple of days ago, not expecting the plant to live at all. But it seems to have recovered and is even growing a bit. My question is: The bottom leaves are yellow unlike the other ones as you can see in the picture. Is this a PH problem? Also, it seems to have a lot of it eaten off by bugs. What's a good and safe method to get rid of this problem? Thank you.
I apologize for the poor picture quality, it was taken on my phone.

the yellowing is likely a result of the earlier poor soil conditions. the new growth looks nice and green. is the bug damage new or did it appear in the older spot?

It could be ph, More often than not, clay soil is alkaline (has a high pH) and that can be hard on plants.
So check on that!
