I've been noticing horsefly's being attracted to my plants, can they harm them at all? Theres been some slugs after heavy rain too. I know they like beer, but can they harm the plants at all? If not why even bother deter them?

You can get rid of slugs with copper tape. I wouldn't think too much of the horse flies.

Horse flies are not anything to worry about, slugs will eat your plants and slime them up something nasty so keep them away.

Thanks, how well does beer work anyway?

Beer works great. There is probably not a better way to kill them. Copper tape works as a fence. It is painful and possibly lethal for them to cross. They won't do it.
You should be able to get beer traps for cheap. Many of them look like a big mushroom.

I think I'd rather just pick them off by hand and let them live

you'll think twice about that strategy after a rainy night when you find your plants ravaged with no leaves left.
i've noticed that slugs seem to like MJ plants especially after they've started flowering and have a bit of a smell to them. one year i had zero problems until the first week of flowering, when i came upon the ladies who had every leaf eaten down to the stem with the tell-tale slime-trails giving away the culprits.

i had the same problem with slugs recently... i live in michigan and have had 3 plants going strong for 2 months now, but about a week ago when i went to give them nutrients i noticed that there was slime on one of them and some leaves looked chewed up, needless to say i found two or three of the fuckers hanging on the bottoms of the leaves where it was hard to see them. The same day i went to home depot and picked up a box of anti snail and slug repellant shit, looks like little pellets. i spread that shit on my plants and they havent been around since.

An old household remedy to slug problems is putting broken egg shells around the base of the plants where the slugs climb up. I think that the sharp edges of the shells cuts up the slugs, deterring them from their goal. It can't hurt to try it. The worst that'll happen is you make a little extra compost

My favorite pest deterrent is dichotomous earth. It looks like weird translucent sand but in actuality it is billions of dead sea critters that have shells made of silicone. When the slug or other pest tries to cross the small ridge I pour around the base of my stems, they get cut up by the silica. It really is great stuff and totally nontoxic.

my favorite slug/snail preventative strategy is simply to use copper. you can get copper tape at a garden nursery, or just strip an old cable and get the copper wire inside. wrap it around the base of the stem loosely, and it will do the job fine. slugs and snails will not crawl over the metal, as it induces a reaction similar to that of touching salt
