yeah, theres one cd set that was studio disc one, and live disc two, and it had the BEST studio stuff ive ever heard. it had "Ripple" "Shakedown Street"...fuck i cent remember what else was on it
but on the live disk, one night while really stoned, i was listening to a song, dont remember which one, but they were battling with their guitars, and the rest of the band was following which ever guitar they were getting the best vibe from, and the music played the story of the death and resurection of Christ...it was AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL.....when music can give you that, its from the souuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul...these guys were in my opinion are musicians who played to win Gods heart....like David

Looks like it's May 8th, 1977. And it's joining me in my end-of-the-week last-minute homework binge.

whats the best album they have?
-------------------- Learning to love life by living through loss and mistakes
Lessons learned then gradually surfacing
Letting go, stripping naked to scream
I am not perfect, nor do I strive to be
I am alive in this world of face-first falls and public breakdowns
I'm a retarded, disfigured clown
Dying to be heard for the simple art of letting this heavy wall finally fall
I'm an equal being of no race or color
A hallucination if you will
Sneaking into the lives of strangers and letting them fall apart
To a new rhythm, just to feel better

They do not have good albums. They have some acceptable albums. But nothing they ever did in the studio could hold a candle to their live performances. I think the best exposure to them would be to follow the links here... which of their live stuff is "best" really varies a lot depending on what styles of music you're inclined to... i really like the early stuff (1966-1971) and the peak years with Brent (1979-1982, 1985, 1989-1990). But there are definintely gems hidden throughout their entire career. The Dicks Picks series highlights some of these.
If you really want to listent to studio albums, I guess American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, and Terrapin Station would be my recommendations.

Early GD is wonderful. Once they got all phishy and jammy, they lost me.
Workingman's Dead is the best album.
I also love GD philosophy. Dead Headz.

Speaking of early Grateful Dead, check out October 25th, 1969 @ the Winterland. The recording is missing the first helf-dozen songs of the concert, but the selection that's survived the years is phenomenal. We get the end of the set: Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Love Light, with Stephen Stills joining in for Lovelight.
Glad to see there's other stoner Deadheads out there. Great links so far.
(Edit: Oh, and if people aren't aware, you can download the "stream-only" concerts from archive.org by changing "details" to "download" in the address bar. It'll bring you to a directory with all of the files, usually in several formats)
(Edit #2: Post #420 FTW!)
