If you like jazz, the live album "Without a Net" is a great one, the Dead playing with Branford Marsalis.

"Ladies and Gentlemen: The Grateful Dead" is a good live album of the latter days of the early dead (1971).

If you like acoustic-style stuff, I recommend "Dead Set" and "Dick's Picks Volume 8".  Or just go to archive.org and check out the Warfield shows from 1980.

If you decide you like them, I'd just surf around archive.org to see what you like best... personally I find myself gravitating to the Brent Mydland-era Dead (late '79 to late '90), since I like the sound of his organ so much.  But there's good material throughout, it's just a matter of figuring out what you like.

The european tour shows from 1972 are also highly recommended.

Thank you :crankbowcloud:

Or give this one a try: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1979-10-31.sbd-bertha.ashley.17360.shnf

The first set isn't that spectacular, so I recommend giving it a listen starting on the track Shakedown Street (the beginning of set 2)... the Passenger that follows just lit my ears on fire (in a good way)

Ah well, also don't forget about the ancillary bands like JGB - they are a rockin' good time with a gospel flair!  Organs FTW :yesnod:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Aetree%20AND%20creator%3A"Grateful%20Dead"

Pick a show with a good rating.

http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead

Or pick a show that has a ton of downloads from the right hand side there.

Can these soundboards be downloaded or are they stream only?

They can be downloaded. When viewing the soundboard page, change the foldername "details" to "download" in the address bar. Voila, you get a directory full of the files. You can't download the zipped archives, but you could set up a download program to download the folder if you're lazy. The gd***.txt file has the set list correlated to the track names.
