Cloning to Determine Sex

I have a bunch of 4 week old plants here (grew from seed). They are between 4 and 6 inches tall now. I want to find out their sex so I could axe the males right now. I don't have enough room to be growing males. It seems to me that the best way to do this is by taking a cutting from each plant, labeling it and the parent plant, and then puting the clones on 12/12 to see what their sex is. However, none of the brances have nodes on them so far - they all just come off of the main shoot and end with a leaf. Would it not work to try and sex a cutting right now? When I try to sex the cutting, I would be looking for buds developing in a node, right?

It would work, just take the entire top of the plant off as a clone. It isn't the best way but it works.

Yup.
At four weeks old, you should start to see some preflowers soon. A bit of patience may be the best route.

Yeah, but preflowers won't determine sex, right? They'll just show that the plant is sexually mature. Sex isn't determined until 12/12. Am I correct about this?
If so, I think I'll wait a few weeks until I can get a cutting in a less intrusive way than cutting the whole top of the plant off.

A preflower will definetly show sex. A female preflower has white hairs coming from it, that alone will tell you it's a female. Also, sexing is always just a waiting game when growing from seed, there is no reason to try and speed it up. When you go into the 12/12 cycle, for the plants you haven't yet confirmed are female, just wait until they show female calyxes, or male pollen balls. Easy.

Okay, well I see nothing like that right now, and as far as I can remember from my last 2 grows, I haven't noticed white hairs until much further into the grow. I could be wrong though. The reason I don't have time to wait months into the grow to determine sex is because my space is limited and I need to get rid of the males ASAP. I'll wait another week and if I don't see any preflowers, I'll go the cloning route.

It will probably take just as long to take a cutting, plant it, wait for it to root, and then mature, as it would be to just wait until they show sex normally. Just my opinon.

I could have just missed it last year, but I can't remember them showing sex until like 3 months into the grow. I guess I'll just play it by ear for now and keep my eyes peeled.
