Clones and Early Sexing
    #220756 - 04/28/09 12:19 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I've read that you can put a garbage bag over the lower branch of your plants on a 12/12 cycle for about a month to get an early identification on the plant's gender if they're growing outdoors. This seems to be a very time consuming process though. I was wondering if it was more practical to just clone the plants when they have 4 sets of true leaves and then get the clones rooted and transferred into soil. Then switch the clones to a flowering cycle so that you can identify the clones gender thus identifying the outdoor plant's gender as well. Would this method allow an early identification or would it take just as long to complete this process as it would for an outdoor plant to naturally reveal it's gender. Basically I don't know how long it would take to root some clones and get them to indicate gender. For all I know, it could take longer to do this than it would for the outdoor plants to naturally reveal their genders. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well I don't know how it will work but I have seen clones root in 5 days with enough humidity and attention

I have had clones root in five days and have seen pistils within 30 days from that point. I usually know the sex of my plants by June.

I haven't gotten this to work for myself, but I hear that you can get clones to show just by dropping them in a cup of water and giving them 12/12 light cycles. Due to the plants natural response to the change in lighting, the clone will try to flower before it roots. Theoretically you could know sex in 2 weeks...
