There can be multiple factors; ranging from not enough light ,lights too far away, bad genetics, bad soil.
The most common stretching, i have found, is caused by not having enough LIGHT. Depending on the type of lights you are using , you can keep a CFL [ compact floro ] very close to your plant , which will prevent the plant from having to stretch to reach the lights[ i would not recommend using this method if you have HPS or stronger lighting ]. If your plant has stretched too far already , and you wanna fix it - Take a Straw, cut a slit down the straw, open it up , place it around your plant until it can stand on its own. Also try to put a little fan on it , this will keep the wind moving across the plant thus thickening the stem naturally.

It doesn't necessary have to be "bad" genetics. Some strains naturally grow taller than others with the space between the nodes being naturally greater.
