180-200°C (356-392°F) is the most effective range for cannabis according to:

I've heard it varies from strain to strain, ie. indicas are best a little hotter and sativas a little cooler or something like that.
In general, I start a bowl in my volcano at 368F and I move up a couple degrees after every balloon until the bowl is gone at 380F or so.

There's not really a simple answer to your question.
Optimal temperature for YOU depends on what kind of high you want (more sativa heady or indica stone), what kind and quality herb you have, how efficient your vape is, the moisture content of the herb...
What vaporizer do you have? What quality herb do you normally vape?

I tend to agree, Fox, except I'm not so sure about temperature dictating whether the high is more indica- or sativa-like, wouldn't that just depend on the strain?

Yes you're correct it does depend on the strain. But there's a but...
THC has a lower boiling/vaporization point than the other cannabinoids, CBD.. CBN....
If you have say a 50/50 hybrid and would like a more sativa high, you set the temps low in hopes of only vaporizing the THC and very little of the other compounds. If you want a more indica stone you crank up the temps to vaporize more CBN and CBD which account for the sedative effects of an indica.
Try and find a 50/50 hybrid and do some experiments with temp ranges. Once you perfect the art you can choose what kind of high you want.
Keep in mind quality of herb plays a big role in getting this down. The higher the quality, the easier it is to find the right temps and know where to set it to achieve the high you're looking for.

Interesting, great info Fox, it makes sense I just never really put it together.

Yeah I stumbled upon it when I was trying to figure out how to work my vape.
Used the same herb, one day the temp was too low and it was just an amazing wake 'n bake.. I cleaned the house, worked on my van, wrote some music... however the herb was still slightly green and I wanted it to be crispy brown so the next day I cranked up the temp and well... lets just say I ate everything in sight and didn't move a muscle for 4 hours then had a nice few hour nap.
I looked up the boiling points for the different compounds and WHALAH! after some practice I was choosing my high.
pretty nifty.
