New Grow Room Help needed

I'm about to purchase a Darkroom 3'11x7'11x6'7 (model 120L) and have some questions on what fans to purchase.
I'm not new to growing. Before I built by own box and grew with a 600w in a cool tube cooled and ventilated with a vortex 172cfm fan.
For the Darkroom, I plan on having 2 600w lights in cool tubes. I think that cooling the lights should be it's own system separate from ventilation; is my 172 cfm fan from my old grow sufficient (it now won't have to pull through a carbon filter) to cool the lights? I know I'll need to get a bigger fan to pull air threw a bigger carbon scrubber, but do I need a bigger fan to cool the 2 600w lights when the cooling system is separate from the ventilation and odor control.
I will have it in a basement which has good low temps.
And what size of carbon scrubber is best for a room of this size filled with plants?
Thanks for any help,
Romulaxx

I would recommend two 400W lights. That is plenty of light for such an area. No need in adding any unnecessary heat to the area.
The old exhaust fan is fine for cooling the lights. I hope you realize that tubes aren't nearly as effective as other reflectors. I like Hydro Farm's Daystar reflectors. They are great with dealing with heat and there is a version that has a built in 6" flange. Well worth the money IMO.
Just remember that you will need to be able to evacuate all the cubic feet of air -in the room- within 5 minutes. In other words if your room is 10'x 8' x 7' that equals 560 cubic feet. Divide that number by 5 and you get 112. So, I need to get a exhaust fan/carbon filter that is AT LEAST rated at 112. Given the dimensions, heat, and humidity that you may face, I recommend a 6" Can Fan combo that will pull at 200-250cfm.

I agree with that as well. Thats a kinda small space and even 1 600 would be plenty. Imop

Thanks for the reply.
What about a general rule I've heard time and again of at least 50w per square foot that you have? I'll have a bit under 32 square feet, 2 600w wouldn't even give me 50w per sq foot...is this advice I've heard time and again wrong?
I'm considering putting in co2 as well... does this change anything? I know you should go with higher temps with co2, and would the 600w lights be good with co2 as the plants can use more light?
Thanks for the help,

I promise two 400W is fine. Remember that 400W HPS are good for 16 sqft, everytime . 400W are perfect for that size space.
co2 will make the plants grow faster. Its worth looking into, but for such a small space, I wouldn't do it.

I assume you mean 600w? A 400w light would only cover about 9 sqft.

When used alone 9sqft is the "primary" coverage area using the average reflector. You can't forget the overlap of the two lights combined. Not to mention the tight space that will surely be covered with mylar, flat white paint, etc. But yeah two 400W HPS is perfect for this size of space.
Jorge Cervantes, in his first video, built a 8'x 8' grow room using four 400W HPS. A good video btw. You can find torrent files with a little googling .

Actually I have that video (ultimate grow DvD 1), he lights his 8' x 8' with 4 600w lights.
I agree with the original poster that 2 600w lights should be ideal in this space. The stable temps in a basement will allow for proper cooling of the light and the enclosed space ensures effective use of said light. The split cooling system idea is a good one in my opinion. I would think your 172cfm would be more than enough of a fan for the purposes of the cool tube; just make sure that fan blows air into the ducting from the outside of the cab to create positive pressure inside the cab ducting. We want the positive pressure to prevent smell from leaking out the cool tube fan exhaust.

cant help u with the lights. but an a addition of hightimes ive got from a few years back, this dude just had a can that had co2 in it(can as in it looked like a large baked beans can or something) but it was rigged up to release co2 every so often. when the plants were sleeping iwana say(could be wrong on that) but its somthing to look into. maybe ill read through a bit and post the details on it. he just had like 3-4 of them hanging in his grow room wich was like 2 good size rooms put together. might be easier then using tanks...

Alright, I just took a look at the vid. Yeah they are 600W . I believe 400W would be fine, but yeah there is nothing wrong with 600W either. Either way would be fine. Keep us posted!
