Lighting Need help.

I have a fairly decent sized space to make a grow chamber. I am not in any hurry to get things going. So I am still in the reading stage of things.
Was thinking of running at the most a 600 hps coupled with a 400 MH. It would be an air vented reflector with a glass shield.
Do I need supplemental uvb when running mh alongside hps.
Does the glass heat shield filter out uvb or modify the spectrum at all?
going to be growing in soil less mix.
cost of course is an issue but not as much as a lot of people. I have been fabbing up grow equipment for years for the shroomies. So I will pretty much be building everything except the reflector, lights, fans etc.
chamber, irrigation, venting, and what not will all be however I decide to make them.
open to ideas.
also would running a 1000w hps with supplemented reptile lights or whatever I decide to buy be a better option then using MH at all.
tons of questions still to come

If you run a 400w mh along with a 600w hps you will not need supplemental uvb lighting, however glass is very effective at filtering out uvb light. If you decide to go with a 1000w hps and the reptile lighting you will be using a little bit more power each month, but you will get better light penetration and probably a larger coverage area. In my experience with the uvb reptile lights (of the compact fluorescent variety) if they are closer than 9-12 inches from the plant it tends to burn the shit out of it. What are the dimensions of the room you plan on using or how much floor space do you want the light to cover?
Here is a pic of one of the plants from my first grow.

If I remember my lightbulbs correctly you will get more lumens from a 600+400 setup than from one single 1000W bulb.
Maybe someone else can confirm this.

I am still working out the ends on what size box to build. I can build it as big as I want. its going in a room as opposed to a closet. can anyone kick me a link to info about the uvb reducing effects of uvb. or is hps mh and supplemented uvb to some advantage.
yeah I would like to read about getting more lumens out of a mh hps setup.
also how do get a hps sodium with enhanced blue spectrum. that marijuana man video showed needing like 270-300nm spectrum as the only usable uvb for trichome enhancement.
amnesiac. are you saying a 1000hps with uvb added will work better as far as penetration as opposed to hps mh being only used above the plants

A 1000w light puts out more intense light than a 600w so you will get deeper light penetration. The reason I said you will get more coverage with a 1000w light is because I am assuming you are going to have the 400w mh and 600w hps focused on the same area. Mh light also put out less lumens per watt than hps do and the mh bulb life is about half that of a hps, so you will get more light per watt with just one 1000w hps. But then again each uvb light is going to use roughly 20w, so with one in each corner of the grow area that would be an additional 80w of power usage and the cost of 4 fixtures. The hps with the enhanced blue spectrum is available from most hydroponic stores, rvf garden supply sells a 1000w color corrected spectrum hps lamp for 105.95. Here is a link that talks about uv rays penetrating glass. From what I understand glass is transparent to uva but opaque to uvb. For a better link and more info on why uvb doesn't penetrate through glass google " uvb glass".
