Difference in light watts...

Honestly, whats the difference in growth and such between say a 150w and 400w HPS? Is it worth the heat and price to go for a 400w? and why is that?

One of the most often overlooked factors about using a higher wattage light is penetration power. A 400w light will shine through about a foot of solid canopy where a 150w will only illuminate the top level of the plant. Another reason to step up to a 400w is the coverage; you can get many more plants under a 400w as opposed to a 150w.
The negative aspects of the 400w you already mentioned, are heat and power. If you can handle the extra heat then I would say go for the 400w as the difference in power usage is negligible in my opinion.

powers not so much the issue... start up price. 150w is $75, 400w is $500. Guess i'll do 150 and step up to a 400 later cause obv its worth it...

What I recommend to growers who want to use a lower watt bulb/balast is to use it, but to hang 2 CFL lights down in to the canopy so the sides get lights...So it's roughly 200 watts with 100 on the sides...You will want to rotate your plants to ensure all sides get the growth you want.
But like he said higher wattage will deliver higher results if you don't hang those lights down in the canopy. Also the more plants the higher your wattage should be...If you want good results...That or add more lights.
