Apollo Mist, Matanuska Tundra, and Thunk

Welcome to the second grow-log of Sirius and Pipesmoker Elf (who never posts ). We've recently started germinating new seeds, and now is a good time to start documenting their growth here at the Growery. The best place to start is a brief overview of the strains we are running this time around.
First, we have Apollo Mist, by Reservoir Seeds. This is a strain that has been out of production for a few years now, as Rez likes to move from project to project and keep trying out new crosses, and we managed to get lucky while watching Seedbay like hawks. From our research, the strain is primo stuff, and its a cross from the fourth generation of Rez's breeding with Apollo 11, and a cut from Kali Mist from Serious Seeds, before the strain was re-worked in '98. Apollo Mist is more sativa-dominant, but it has a quick flowering time due to the Apollo 11 genetics.
Secondly, we have Matanuska Tundra, from Sagarmatha Seeds. For those of you who read through our first grow-journal, you'll remember that we had tried running this strain then, but had poor germination rates with it while having exceptional rates with several other strains. We contacted Sagarmatha simply to ask about how they germinate their seeds, to have a better idea of how to try the last five seeds in the pack, and they graciously offered to replace the seeds. When they arrived, we found, not one, but two breeder packs waiting for us. Matanuska Tundra is a more indica-dominant strain with rock-hard buds and a potent, creeper stone. Some of the phenotypes are said to smell like chocolate, and the strain has unique characteristics where the pistils simply won't turn anything but white. This strain is one that we've been interested in since the beginning, and we're really anticipating finally being able to grow it out.
Then, we have Original Thai Haze x Skunk #1, otherwise known as Thunk. These came as a pack of freebies from Seedbay, and were bred by Sam the Skunkman, who is responsible for bringing Skunk to the world. These seeds are also known to be several years old. Most of the phenotypes we've seen are nearly pure sativa, and this strain will keep stretching and stretching, both through time and space, as it also has a l-o-n-g flowering time. The wait is said to be much more than worth it, as the strain is very potent and features an electric, even psychedelic high.
The first time we tried germinating some seeds from each, we had some problems. We first tried in cotton discs, to help keep a closer eye on them. As some started to crack, we decided to put all of them into pure coco, as it seemed like being in a more breathable medium would help them. Barely anything successfully germinated, and some of the seeds didn't split in the first place. We then tried a technique where the seeds are manually popped, and then we had much better success, with taproots coming out in a day from seeds left from the first try that didn't crack at all on their own. There is a thread here that covers this technique much more in-depth. Two of the Apollo Mist did actually manage to germinate from the first try though, one of which quickly grew into a healthy seedling, while the other one has had problems and has been requiring a lot of nursing (it seems like it will make it). Here's Apollo Mist #1, from a few days ago:
As the seeds have all been years old or known to have germination problems, they've been slower to germinate than our last grow and have been requiring a lot of help, with getting the seed hull off or with shaking free from layers of skin that hold cotyledons together. We've been intervening closely with everything we can due to their special needs (and also the risk of losing out on the run of Apollo Mist, knowing we'll never see a release of this strain again), and it has been paying off, because it seems like we'll have five Apollo Mist seedlings, at least four of Matanuska Tundra, and at least two Thunk. Here's two pictures of our germination setup right now. They are the same, but I've included one that captures the fluorescent light a little more naturally, because I love the ambiance it creates.
There are also two rooted clones with the seedlings, as well as two more clones we just took tonight from our plants that are in mid-flowering. I'll be updating on them along with these new seedlings. We have a clone each from White Satin #2, White Satin #3, and Critically Smashed #3, as well as a male clone of Critically Smashed phenotype that grew quite differently than the other two males of the same strain did. It was much, much shorter and naturally split into two main branches. I don't expect the latter trait to repeat in this clone, but I thought its stature was note-worthy and decided to not kill the clone. Now that we realized we had to take a clone of CS#3, the reality of making Critically Smashed f2's is here.
So, this will be updated as the grow progresses. With the exception of the healthy Apollo Mist, all the rest of the seedlings have just sprouted in the last two days or so (not counting the other Apollo Mist with the stunted taproot - it actually stopped growing very prematurely, but roots are beginning to grow from it now). Our plans are to take clones from every single Apollo Mist phenotype, female and male. We're planning on making two f2 generations from different parents to be able to create two lines that we will narrow down for the most desired phenotypes that best represent the strain, and then be able to preserve the expression of these phenotypes, but avoid inbreeding, by giving it the hybrid vigor of crossing the two lines in the end. We are very interested in breeding and would love to preserve this strain, as well as to use it in projects to create our own strains.
The other interesting thing that we will try out with this grow is a vertical scrog with the Thunk strain. The strain performs better with lower levels of light, will need to be allowed to do its own thing because its long flowering time, and will need to be trained since it loves to grow, all due to its wonderful, pure sativa nature, and a vertical scrog addresses all of this. After a week or two from germination, the Thunks will be put in 12/12. The vertical scrog will allow us to create more of a two-dimensional plane that can sit alongside the edges of the grow room, not taking any space from the other plants.
So, that about covers this so far, thanks for reading, and we look forward to updating again soon!

Hey elf! Welcome to the party, you should stick around. Sirius/Elf: Really looking forward to this grow, I'd say keep us posted, but I know you will! Just hope you stay tuned in for my first grow the way I'm staying around for yours!

Yeah dude, you'd better know we're both excited to see how everything goes. I'm sure you're looking forward to how Thunk goes; we'll definitely try to dial her in so you have the best idea of what will happen with yours.
t0ad and dude, thanks for swinging in, by the way.

It hasn't even been a day yet since we've made this grow-journal.
The last Apollo Mist seed that hadn't popped up yet was helped out of its seed hull. They certainly don't grow very vigorously, probably due to the age of the seeds, and if we didn't help the cotyledons out of the seed, it would have just sat there and eventually got rotten. The good news, though, is that if this one makes it the rest of the way all right, we should have five Apollo Mist plants to work with, which gives us a good chance of getting at least one male and one female (hopefully two of each! ). We also topped the two clones today to help keep them smaller. That is pretty much it though.

Good luck with these well picked strains! This will be interesting!
side note: You could use a higher jpg compression without noticing any difference in your pics. The file size of your pictures is too large for the resolution. 1024x768 pixels in 250kb should be good. Definitely use a batch processing tool for resizing and compressing.
