my first grow, so far so good, mmm heady budz... *COMPLETED*
    #18069 - 05/03/08 01:06 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

this is my first attempt at serious growing cannabis. a friend gave me 7 different bagseed. 6 of 1 strain and 1 of another. 5 of them germinated, 1 showed to be a male at 31 days. out of the 4 left 3 are definately females and one is still undefined.

because it's my first grow i wanted to go small and quick.

the setup is 2 roughneck tubs, half assedly spray painted white on the inside. with 2 26w cfls in the blue spectrum for veg. and 4 50w cfls in the red spectrum for flower.

seeds were sprouted on march 17. on april 17 they were put on 12/12.

on one plant i tried LST (the undefined sex one), another plant i did a mini scrog, another i topped and another i tried to supercrop but it didn't work and the bracnh healed back up straight.

one plant suffered from some yellowing on the older leaves. those were pruned and it was lightly flushed.

today i can definately see some pistils on 3 of them.

i have a 4" booster duct fan hooked up to a homemade carbon scrubber, about 12 inches long, 6" wide. 2 x 4" intake holes and a small circulation fan inside.

so far so good.

opinions/help and constructive criticism encouraged.

Awesome! It looks like you have fun growing and experimenting around. What's really cool is you gave me a great idea with those roughneck tubs, to be used for clones and seedlings and the like.

Good job so far buddy, I really like your use of the Macro in those last couple pictures

They look like they're in very early flower, right? I can't say for sure, but I think that plant in the 5th picture might be male....

thanks guys. my camera is actually pretty shitty it took a while to get some focused pics. the 5th pic is the male that showed his nuts at day 31. one day after going to 12/12

i am excited about my first pistils. if i can get my new grow hut up i will transfer the grow into there.

yesterday i noticed some burns on a plant and decided to just build my new grow hut which will soon accommodate my hps. it's running the 4 CFLs now.

so i went to lowes, got some 1x2s and 1x3s and 4x4ft of plywood. i made a plywood top and bottom and a fairly sturdy frame with the 1x3s and 1x2s. then i installed 2 6" flanges for the reflector cooling, 1 4" flange for the carbon scrubber and 2 4" flanges for intake.

the measurements are 33" W x 20" D x 60" H. those measurements were taken to fit a space in my closet or else i would have gone deeper. also just right to fit through the closet door. although after i installed the flanges (all on the front), it wouldn't fit thru the door, so i had to bend all of them in and also remove my closet door to get the sucker in.

i got a 4" duct booster fan for the scrubber, and will get a 6" booster fan for the reflector. i also have a 4" circulation fan in there. it seems to be working and temps usually don't go over 80 too often, but this is with CFLs...

anyhow, i think the plants are much happier now and can even stretch oout some more.

so all of them came from a really good bagseed. and the pistils just showed a few days ago. it looks more indica. how many weeks should i expect to wait from now?

your plants look healthy so far

hopefully you get a good number of females out of those

3/4 females so far. there's technically 2 strains in there, maybe the one that hasn't showed sex is a different strain?

i have a 400w HPS on the way. do you think it's an easy transition from the CFLs to an HPS or will they get burnt? i'm kinda curious to see how weel they'd finish with only CFLs but on the other hand i want to use the hPs and get bigger buds...

return your 400 and get a 600w youll be much happier and get better results. and fuck the fluros for the finish just veg and clone under them. rooted plants should have no problem under the Hps just keep it a foot or so a way UNLESS its not an air cooled hood then just stick yer hand between plant and light and feel for it.

don't bother growing only CFL, you won't be happy with the result, your yields will suck, bud density will be crap, and you'll have a host of other problems for sure.

If anything supplement your HPS with the CFL's, use the CFL's to help light the lower and side areas of the plant which don't get as much light as the top. That's the best way i can think of for you to utilize the CFL's throughout your entire grow.

by next week i should have the biggest improvement, the 400w super hps with a cooltube. got some sour diesel sprouts in the works too and some clones coming my way in a few weeks. so many more grow logs to come... although it's my first time and i made some mistakes, it feels very good to be growing my own medicine.:mushroom2:

now with the new setup i get better temps (around 70ºF). also more space for them to strech. my lst attempt failed because i did it too late, so i took it out and just tied the main stem to a bamboo stake so the under buds could get some light.

everything seems to be going well so far, i already learned a whole lot, but one thing that still bothers me is the possibility of hermaphroditism. how soon can i tell? does anyone see any male preflowers in my pics? and also are bagseed more likely to be hermies?

i'm thinking the flowering might take longer than i expected, so i took some clones which i am trying to root and reveg. btw, if have seeds that came from a bag of sour diesel, can i say they are sour diesel or are they bagseed? i just don't get the whole seed thing yet.

If it came from sour diesel it is 50% sour diesel at the least as you have no idea where the pollen came from. So just call it a sour diesel cross.

Bagseeds often are the result of hermies, this is especially true if you only find one or two seeds in an Oz. These seeds will come from plants that look like true females but have just a few male flowers here and there that are almost impossible to find.

Only time will tell if your plants are affected. I'm also of the opinion that some hermies are sterile and wont produce seed despite the presence of male flowers, If any one else has noticed this I'd like to hear about it.

In short, even if some of them do show a couple of male flowers during flowering, don't just rip them out automatically, this is your first grow I think and the experience you gain will be well worth whatever harvest you get even if it does have a few seeds.

This is true in some cases. There's also a nutrient solution called purple maxx which is supposed to render hermie flowers sterile as well as do a few other things.

My friend just did a grow with a 250 watt hps lamp and a single bag seed. He ended up with a 1/2 ounce of really really good weed which surprised all of us. Like the weed was good enough that it would of cost extra if he had bought it. The buds were big and covered with crystals and the smell was indescribable. Yeah I know it's a fluke since it was his first grow as well but I thought my story might encourage you.

it's been a while, but only because i didn't want to update the log until my flower box is stable. i got the 400w super hps with an air cooled reflector but since it's been extremely hot here i can't use it without getting around 93ºF. so i am back with the CFLs.

some of the earlier original 4 plants are starting to show some trichome formation and the LST'd plant that was unsexed turned out to be a girl. did some pruning, pinching and lst on most of the plants except for the short bushy one i topped a while ago.

i added to the flower box 2 sourdiesel bastard seedlings (bagseed) and 1 leda uno seedling and 1 bahia black head seedling(12/12 from seed).

in veg i have 4 of bahia black heads and 4 more leda unos,  2 thaitanic clones, 1 clone from a sativa looking girl of mine and 2 more weak sour diesel bagseeds

i am looking forward for a sample bud in maybe 3-4 weeks? from the pics, how soon do you think i try a sample?

leda uno & bahia blackhead or in portuguese "cabeca de nego"

05/19 short topped plant, indica looking

i'm still trying to figure a way to deal with the heat so i can finish them with the hps, opinions welcome!:mushroom2:

I would avoid sampling honestly until you either really close to harvest, or just pick off some popcorn from the harvest and quick dry it.

Immature buds a.) taste like shit b.) don't really get you that high. I would really only do it early if you had budsites that just aren't getting enough light and won't pack on much weight. In that case i'd say id take sample around 40-45 days into flowering. It'll give you an OK idea of how things are going to turn out, however, since the trich's are probably going to be mostly clear the high may be significantly different when you let them mature.

when do you start counting flowering days?

-when you switch to 12/12?
-when you see preflowers?

they are at day 32 of 12/12.

Usually i start the count from the day i flip the lights to 12/12. Some people start the count when they first see flowers (actual buds, not preflowers). While using the calendar is ok to gauge remaining time, you're better off paying attention to the plant. Just because the breeder lists the flowering period as 55-60 days doesn't mean you'll get the pheno that may have produced those results. Especially if you end up with a more sativa dominant pheno (if growing a hybrid). In the case of the diesel, that's a sativa dominant strain, my NYCD went 12 weeks and i think they could have use two more.

i agree that the plant should tell me when to harvest opposed to a calendar. now, would the size of plants and buds make the flowering period slightly shorter?

nope, but a short plant will result in smaller buds (compared to a larger plant at least).

day 38:

on some plants, few pistils are starting to turn orange/amber, is this a sign that harvest is coming in a few weeks?

See, that term pedo gets thrown around a lot.
Is a 16 year old guy having sex w/a 16 year old girl a pedophile?
If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

thanks guys. my camera is actually pretty shitty it took a while to get some focused pics. the 5th pic is the male that showed his nuts at day 31. one day after going to 12/12

i am excited about my first pistils. if i can get my new grow hut up i will transfer the grow into there.

from what I know, you shouldn't flower them yet. I think it's very hard for a female plant to revert to vegetation after it's been flowering, and those plants still look pretty small. Nice plants though

indicas I take it?

true, and if the entire plant isn't covered with male bananas, why couldn't you just cut those parts off?

I don't think he's intending on putting the plants back into vegetation after he flowers them, unless you're referring to his other statement about taking clones and putting those clones back into vegetative state. In that case, he shouldn't have a problem doing so, although it might take longer/be more difficult for the clones to root, although not much if it isn't too far from when the light was switched.

If you're referring to not flowering them yet because of their size, they should grow two to three times the size they were before he flipped the lights to flowering.

i dont know what youre talking about, but i did successfully take some clones that had pistils on them and are reveging fine. although i did get some 80% sativa clones that were flowering and they havent rooted yet, might never root.

so i can say i've learned a lot. i finally have a stable grow setup now. i got a 2.5 x 2.5 secret jardin and now i can control the temps better and still use my faithful mini diy scrubber.

i've been harvesting slowly, leaving some finish and some harvested at 7.5 weeks. only one of the original plants, which seems to be a different strain is still finishing. all the rest that were harvested are very heady buds, instense head high and very active. i love it:mushroom2:

heres some pics, the last two pics are from a sour diesel bagseed, hopefully pure SD. it looks good and it's got some fat roots from transplant shock perhaps.

i'll have to say this is the end of this grow log. it was nice, and there are more to come.

peace
