best, easiest set up for noobs
    #57111 - 06/13/08 08:05 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I am new to this site, and was wandering around reading as much as I can, and I was wondering whats you guys take on being a noob and wanting to start a few indoor hydro plants, what would be the easiest, to maintain for a beginner?

I visit a local shop frequently, and they have what looks like the square PVC fence post covers that cover 4x4 posts? with like 6 3-4 inch holes drilled in line, with what look like little black baskets. Not sure, but it looked like there was only one input and on output for each tube. Would be a constant flow system??? thought it would be okay if you wanted to keep smaller plants.
Let me know what you guys think, I want to seriously look into a first set up that will allow me to learn and expand.

Ebb & flo systems are pretty easy to use, I started out with a  3x3 American Hydroponics table.

you can also make 5gal buckets into Ebb&flo.

you have any design specs? I am waiting on a book on Hydroponics, but I know that the best experience and set ups come from the people that have done it, and trial and error'd a few times.

DWC is easiest and has the upside of not spreading infection amonst your plants (no shared reservoir)

DWC or deep water culture is the same thing as a "bubbler hydro setup".

Basically you just get a net which can be make shift where your roots grow and a bucket the net sits in filled with nutrient rich water and a bubbler to keep the water airated.

maintaince = changing the water.

I think the DWC is the way to go for me being a beginner into hydro... Now as far as energy use... what would I be looking at for say 4-6 plants?

fuck nothing

those aquarium pumps are like 10-15watts.

10 plants would be the same consumption as a flood table flooding for 15minutes 4 times a day or so.

both = very low energy consumption.

Okay, and what would I need for lights?

Is it the same as soil growing?

lights are whatever you want for any grow.

High Pressure Sodium is good

High Pressure Sodium with a MH conversion is better.

High Presure Sodium with another MH setup is even better.

Ballast, Bulb, Reflector = a lighting setup... air cooled reflectors are better, digital ballasts are more effective and some bulbs have better energy usage and even sometimes more wattage. (a argos bulb will do 430w on a 400w ballast)

Good quality spectrum adjusted HPS lamps are great for vegging and make MH lamps redundant.  You only really need a HPS these days.

yeah but if you have a vegging room and a flower room

you would still want a MH over a HPS.

You would be kind of silly to dedicate HPS lamps to a veg room.
