As for whether you should "beat him up" or not, have you found out anything about why they hooked up.
Did did she come onto him purely to get back at you (yes this happened to me, eventually my friend asked me if i was ok about it, i said yeah, next thing you know she wasn't interested in the slightest with him anymore.... Funny that) or did it seem that he was interested in her (maybe while you were going out).
Has he provoked/mocked/insulted you about it, you know the sort of stuff "hahaha i fucked your ex last night" ect ect?
Stuff to consider when trying to figure out who's really at fault, the ex or the friend.
As for fighting advice, flail your arms around madly and randomly running in circles, shut your eyes and breathe in short small breaths.
