Humidity...
    #161112 - 12/12/08 01:26 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Importance of humidity?  Right now my room stays a constant 20%... ouch.  I've been told 50% is optimal... should i work on increasing it?  And if so, how can i?

I dunno, some people say it is, some people think it's not.  Personally I'm of the latter, IMO humidity is only really important when rooting clones.  If you want to raise the humidity in your room you can reduce the airflow a little bit and see if that helps.

I've got away with between 20 and 30% for a long while. The heat is more of a factor IMO. as long as your temperature range is close to optimal then humidity shouldnt matter too much. You'll be thanful of it come flower time.

low humidity can cause dry buds, beware!

but thats about it, no sweet buds but dry w/o  a lot of resin trichome production.

I did not know this. I'm sure I've heard the buds increase resin production to try to protect the bud from the dry atmosphere. I may be making stories up though. I have a tendency to do that! lol.

I wonder if you could put a UVB bulb in there to counteract it and stimulate resin production again. Might be an interesting experiment.
THC covered bus that take little time to dry once harvested. hmmm....

Toad, can I get a source for that? Resin and trichome production are genetic traits much more than environmental.

Humidity itself has never really been a huge issue in my opinion, but the things that it can lead too are. Stomata on the under-side of leaves regulate CO2 intake and water vapor output. This relationship is known as the transpiration-photosynthesis curve. The more CO2 is taken in, the more water is lost.
This effect is even more pronounced in conditions of low humidity. As the amount of water available to roots decreases, stomata close to conserve water; as the stomata close, photosynthetic rate decreases, because of lower CO2 intake rate, resulting in slower growth. When the humidity is low, this happens much faster than in a system with higher humidity so you will be watering much more often to produce the same growth rate.

As far as raising the humidity, a humidifier with a humidistat would serve the purpose sparklingly.

What about a "Iced Air" wick humidifier/fan?  Thinking about it... it would fit right between the wall and room in the closet and i could just visqueen seal it in...

The room used to sit at a solid 85 (Yea, ouch, 400w HID) but it just got re-designed and now its a cool 75-78.  We had some burnage and bleaching but fixed it with a bit of training and like i said, removing bends from the airflow!
