The first one is like $30 and the second one is like $100, and at first I thought it would be necessary to get the second one, but after reading through the information on carbon filters that they provided, it seems like the more expensive one is unnecessary for his specific circumstance.
It suggests that effective treatment of the air requires that the exchange of air in the room occur in five minutes. The room my friend will be growing in has about 120 cubic feet, and the first fan has 80 cubic feet, the second one 170.
Now, mathematically it would appear that the first one should suffice, but I'm wondering about heat. The light would be a 600 watt HPS and the ballast would not be in the same room (leaning towards a digital electronic one). Could the first fan handle the task of keeping the room cool enough, or would it be necessary to go with the second one? Its hard to say what a good base temperature would be in the room normally during the summer. Also, noise may be a concern, does anyone know how noisy these particular fans could be?
My friend is willing to spend the cash on the more expensive one if it is necessary, but why spend three times as much if its just overkill, right? At any rate, if its necessary to go to the high end, I think he'd probably put the 170 cubic feet fan above up agansit this one, based on a couple of suggestions I've seen here and at rollitup. I've heard that it is quieter, and its about the same price.

that little inline fan will not pull hard enough to work a carbon filter..get a real vortex or something like the more expensive one you have posted... the inline fan is really just to add in an exhuast set up ..to help keep the air flowing out

I'm looking into these fans as well.
That 170cfm fan won't work a carbon filter in a 4" tube?? What kind of CFM would you suggest to pull through a 4" Carbon filter? Suggested readings?
Also, how loud are these things ? (like comparable to what?)
Thanks!

I saw a combo at HTG: http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=52531
Do those not work together?
Edit: Sorry OP didn't mean to hijack your thread, seemed like we were looking into the same kind of thing tho

I have this exact setup, but my fan is an 8 inch and works in reverse...instead of sucking air through the scrubber it is blowing air through it. The air is sucked through the air cooled shade and pushed out through the scrubber. Works like a charm

I've recently helped another monkey build a cab, that's exactly how we decided to set up his cool tube, fan and filter.

That was actually an idea I had, my cab is 1.5x3... I think it'd work well. The question is.. would it work well for the 4" 170cfm fans as well

Yes, that four inch fan and filter will work fine with a cooltube in a cab that size with a 400w lamp.

i have no idea about that particular fan but my friends fan filter combo isn't excessive by any means. You can hear a low hum but it won't annoy the neighbors.

All right, he's definitely going with the vortex then. The best way to set it up would be to take an exhaust duct from the HPS and to the fan/filter and then out the room, right?
