What are the founding strains of marijuana? Their are so many strains now, and they have all been breeded and mixed from different strains. What are the original strains?

I would guess it would all go back to just indica sativa and that other one that i cant think of right now
then they all kinda evolved into other strains. then those were bred and so on

if one is searching for the "founding strain" one should take into consideration the 3000yr track record of marijuana use worldwide ... Starting with chinese medicine; which I believe was the first period when the true effects of cannabis were fully understood....

landrace strains are considered to be unaltered by human intervention
Hindu Kush is one of them which is a indica land race strain found in the Hindu Kush mountains of Pakistan
There are a few more popular indicas and some sativas such as
Luang Prabang Lao Sativa (I believe this is landrace) Thai Stick Sativa Theres land race strains all over africa, fiji, asia, pakistan, ect... some just aren't as popular as others.

I think it would be interesting to create a family tree of some sort that shows where all the strains came from.

it would be very very elaborate if even possible :P a lot of cannabis strains are guarded too. like Jack Herer is Cinderella 99 crossed with some unknown crap. All of the Arjan strains from GH seed co are guarded genetics.
soma has a small family tree of his strains in his book.

This sounds like the start of something goood. I could see our growery/shroomery community undertaking such a fleeting task! Who,thus far, has even had the audicity to suggest trying to catagorize & find the orgins of modern cannabis...through an emperical means

Maybe the point is not being a boring unoriginal faggot. Real, original breeders, will start with landrace strains usually and work up from there. You can turn pretty much any weed into gold if you know what you're doing. If you've got a gas chromatograph you can also test the potency and selectively breed the plants, to make them as good as any of the shit that they sell on the internet like white widow, super skunk, etc.
It's more work to tame the wild ones and make them how you want them, but but the end result is much more rewarding and satisfying than just crossing some already well known strains and saying you've made a new strain.

He's talking about making a family tree of all known weed strains... who started the topic of becoming breeders?

Ohhh, I misunderstood you because your question didn't seem to have a certain direction and plus I was wasted with only about 4 hours sleep... But, even though it wasn't directed to me, I have to say I think it would be a good idea cause you could check the tree to find out which traits or recessive traits the strains might have and other things like that. But I thought they already had sites where they'd do weed dna tests for you.
This is a cool site btw. Much less restrictive than shroomery. The only problem is this site is new and doesn't get much traffic. It could be as good as overgrow eventually.
