 Switching the light cycle

So it's getting kinda cold up here nowadays and my friends grow in his attic getting dangerously close to freezing every night.
The problem here is that the light in the grow closet is rigged to be on during the daylight hours and turned off at night, so heat is generated when we don't need it, and not generated when the temps get low. Would there be any problems with giving the plants a 24 hour dark period so that the light is on at night to keep the temps above freezing?

Depends.
Some people cut off light for 24-36 hours right after the plants show sign of sexing, which stresses the plant imho. Vegetaton wise, you can get away with it, but you will still stress the plant, i'd say leave the light on for longer & then turn it off vs. having a 24hour dark period.
If the plant is in flowering, your f'd and I wouldn't switch it up like that. Stressing the plant from light can cause male flowers to pop up & seed your weed. Get a small $10 heater fan and place it "near" the plant but not on it too close as to burn it, but so it can warm up the room @ night.

sorry I forgot to mention these plants are only about 2-3 weeks from finishing.
he could just get a space heater, but this is for a 4 ft^2 filing cabinet in a 500ft^2 attic... not very economical

$10 small heating fan that blows from wally world, seriously, don't waste your time changing lights. I had one that was only like 8" tall and a 6" round blade, heated up very nice with a temp knob used it for myself when my computer setup was in a garage. . . or just deal w/ the cold

how cold has it gotten? do you have a thermometer? if it doesnt get below freezing, you should be good. in fact, some strains will turn purple.

I live in colorado, the word cold doesn't even pop up in my head until about 20 degrees.
The lowest it's gotten in his attic is 34 so far

It wouldn't hurt em at all to change the light cycle if its a decent strain that doesn't throw pollen sacks at the first sign of stress.

I'm really not sure about this, but I think they could handle it. Do it gradually; change 4 hours each day and you are done in 3 days. It's always best to have to the lights on at night for temperature control.
