 The Doc builds a cab

Hey guys, I've got this cab pretty dialed in at this point so I decided its time to show her off. Everything except the ballast and the fan are home made. All and all about a 500$ project, not to bad.
Ventilation: 170cfm econoline inline duct fan.
Lighting: 400W Galaxy Digital ballast.
Here it is from the outside.
I keep an air conditioner or a room fan on and the cab is silent, I love my fan speed controller.

My intake is the big hole in the bottom, the baffle is not in place in this picture. The back is a piece of melamine to replace the cardboard it came with.
The baffle.It allows for a great deal of airflow and is 100% lightproof.
I decided to go for a 400w digi ballast but in order to deal with the heat I had to do some air cooling. I decided on a homebrew cool tube. The glass is a pyrex bake-a-round from ebay and it is supported inside the tube with cafe rod brackets, pretty nifty. I can keep my plants about 2" from the glass and they do just fine.
Here's a shot of the cool tube assembly.
Here is how its attached.
I cut a piece of straight ducting to form a reflector.
My carbon scrubber is home made as well, a couple 4" and 6" ducting pieces, some chicken wire and a stocking. Total cost = 25$, can't be beat and 100% effective.
Shown with my ballast box.
I'm a hydro kind of guy so I build a four bucket system to fill the space. All the buckets are connected and run to a rez outside the cab to keep cool. In the rez is a 90gph submersible pump connected to a 1/4" manifold that delivers nutes to each bucket.
Shown here is one of the buckets. (This is after storage, the drain connector is backwards and the ebb and flow filter fitting isn't attached. )
A word of advise, if you buy black 1/4" tubing, it is really stiff. In order to get it to bend into shapes you can use (and stay that way) apply a little heat.
Here are the buckets installed. (Don't mind the lamp, I was starting some seedlings under a cfl...)

Thanks for stopping in usg543, its nice to see you outside the Ikariam thread 
I like the double setup you have there Magash, If I ever lived in the same spot long enough to keep mothers, my cab would be set up the same way. What kind of light is that you have in there, how is the heat? I find that with my 400w and 170cfm I run about 7 deg above ambient.

Where did you get or how did you make your fan speed controller? I have a 6" vortex for my 1.25'x4'x7' and it sounds like a small jet engine taking off. I can only imagine what my apt neighbors think >.>

Ahahaha, I only have a 4" and I know what you're talking about. I built my own fan speed controller, its really simple. Go to home depot and find the dimmer section, look for a Fan Speed Controller, this bit is important, do not use a regular dimmer as it will burn up your fan. Find a fan speed controller that says something like "optimized to reduce hum" or something about no hum that can handle the amperage of your fan (99% of them should). Next I just unplugged the fan, cut the cable in half up near the fan, stripped the wires and connected them to the fan speed controller inside an outlet box. Everything was from Home Depot and cost less than 20$. If you need any help let me know.

Well all my shit gets plugged into one power strip. So theoretically it's my 250 light, 6" vortex, and 4" minifan for circulation inside.
Another amusing story was when I first put it all together and was like "Alright....lets let this bitch fly!" went ahead and turned the fan on and zipped the flaps closed. For my base I have a 2x6 that is about 8 inches short so I only have it screwed in on one wall....well it about ripped that sucker entirely off the wall with the suction from my poly sheeting caving in >.<.

You said outlet box and I assumed. Got a fan speed controller. Only issue is that the medium is WAY below the ON (high setting) -_-. So it's either caving the tent in or I can barely feel flow. Guess I'll just have to leave it on high and go with some serious intakes. Thanks for the help and all. Awesome plants. Keep it up.

Yea, I had the same problem with the first controller I bought. Try to grab a variable speed controller not the one with only three settings.

They don't seem to carry those at my Despot. 
EDIT: Well they DO have them on their website. But it's a website only item -_-. Will order it when I have some $. Until then.....

Hey doc, i just did a search on here for the kind of ballast i am planning on getting. The 400w galaxy. How do you like it? Does it run as cool and quiet as I have been told?

I love that ballast. It runs very cool and dead silent. It starts quickly as well. Yup I give it a double thumbs up.

i wish i was talented like that but i can't even put together a childs lego set let alone build somethin like that
would someone mind explaining to me in detail how to set up those small fans and how to set up a carbon scrubber with them? also wondering exactly how you made that home made carbon scrubber
i know its alot to ask but i am genuinely interested.

Thanks voodoo. I assume the small fan you're talking about is the extractor fan, which isn't very small at all. It is very easy to set up though, screw in the mounting brackets, screw brackets to wall, attach ducting to the top and bottom with duct tape, plug in, and away you go.
As for the carbon scrubber, that wasn't too bad either. Basically, it is just two chicken wire cylinders, 4" and 6" inside each other. the bottom of the cylinders are covered with 4" and 6" duct end caps. The inner and outer cylinder are then covered in 2-3 layers of pantyhose. The space in between the cylinders is filled with activated charcoal. Finally, a 6" to 4" duct adapter is attached to the top of the cylinder. Next time I build one I will make a photo documentary.

sorry the thread is too old, but still I have a question, Do so much water in the cabin really enough for getting right temp.? 2 x 2,5 litres of Heat Bomb would be enough, wouldn't it?
