There are a few ways to get marble when you haven't started on a marble island.

1. Build a level 1 palace and make your first colony on a marble island. A level 1 Palace only costs wood (usually 648 in the early stages of the game, before the building cost reduction researches have been done). Once you have a palace level 1, save up 12,000 gold, 1250 wood, have at least 5 trade ships and 40 spare citizens and then you can make a new town on a marble island and start quarrying it yourself.

2. Trade for it, either via the trading post (trading gold for marble), or in direct trades that you negotiate with your marble island neighbours (trading resource for resource).

3. Pillage for it. In the early stages of the game this is dicey - you're too small to take on any large targets, and small targets won't produce much loot.

4. This option costs real-life money, but I list it for completeness' sake. Buy ambrosia and use the premium trader to transform wood for marble at 2:1 or a luxury resource to marble at 1:1. It costs 3 ambrosia per transaction (but you can transform as much as you can hold in one transaction).
