 400 watt hps w/digital ballast

Ive owned a 1000 watt hps in the past and it produced a good amount of heat. I no longer have it and just ordered a 400 watt hps with a digital ballast and i was wondering what amount of heat i would be looking at from it. Id like to run it in a 2 foot by 4 foot by 6 foot external closet without any inline fans and ducts if at all possible. anyone have any experience with 400 watt hps?

It's gonna need to get cooled one way or the other. It's getting into the colder months here in the N. Hemisphere so that may do it for ya. But theoretically if your room is a closed system then the entire room will eventually become at hot as the hottest part of the system (the light).

I couldn't tell you how much heat to expect (a lot less than a 1000 watt, I'm sure  ), but I'll definitely tell you that there's no way you'll be able to grow without any inline fans or ducting. Even if heat isn't a concern, your plants breathe, just the same as you do, and you're going to need the volume of the air in the room replaced at least twice every minute, so you need an extractor fan capable of moving that much cubic feet per minute (cfm), to make sure they get enough carbon dioxide. Since you'll need that, you might as well get an air-cooled reflector for the HPS, to help pull heat away from the lamp.

i ran a 400 watt in a 5x4x6 room and had to have a exhaust fan.
there is a way to grow without any inlet or outlet fans
but you would need to supplement with co2. have an air conditioner running to take care of the heat problem. also a dehumidifier
to take care of the excess humidity.

So not only will i need to run an inline fan and ducting for the light system but i need to also have and inlet and outlet for the plants also? Damn guess im going to have to drill a few more holes than i thought and look into carbon filters. Thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it.

Well no, you'll really only need one extractor fan that will pull air through your air-cooled reflector for your lights. You would need an opening for air to come into the room, but it can just be a passive thing, letting the force of the extractor fan removing air to naturally bring air in. Of course, it would be better to have another inline fan pulling air in, but it isn't necessary.
