CFL Q's
    #77047 - 07/09/08 05:55 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

So I've been reading a bunch about cfls out of boredom, I already have HID lighting but some of this seems rather interesting.

Theres a guy who grows in a 5.4 sq ft area using 20oz soda bottles with 72 plants he has 588 watts of cfls (42w each 2700 spectrum) and yields 12-14 grams per plant. (7259 lumens per square foot)

At 14 grams per plant he's getting 1.71 gram per watt yield!~

According to the Grow Bible SCROG was invented to maximize the potential of cfls, does anyone think 1-2 gal containers and made a flowering cab with a top that had cfls vertically aiming at 8-10k lumens per square foot do you think I'd break 1gpw? a 3 x 3 area at 10k lumens would cost something like 450-500$ to setup not including nutrients and such. This would be alright with me because I could just make purchases at home depot on my credit card. I don't think buying CFL's and light sockets would be red flagged :P

http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=88449

that's the guy who claims the 12-14 gram per plant 72 plant , 588w (42x14) grow.

so far my research shows that cfls have unmatched yield potential

however a SOG setup such as the one above 72 plants in 5.4 square feet is unpractical.

a lot of heavy weights on icmag agree with this and so far I have no reason to believe otherwise.

cfls lose intensity very fast though but are rather cool, the plants can touch the bulbs sometimes and not be burned.

I'm gonna look into a scrog cfl grow, scrog was invented for florescents so why not?

since CFl's are so energy efficient the debate is less about yield g/W, but rather g/m^2

cfl's are lovely.

i want some pics of the 72 plants.

so guys pullin 36OZ off a 5x5 area...do u know the height?

does he have lighting on all sides, top, and bottom?

pros:
-efficent
-low heat(which would actually be pretty high with all those lights)

cons:
-lot of work

This did not happen. 588 watts of cfl does not even come close to producing over 7000 lumen's per sq foot. A 600 watt hid doesn't do it over a 4x4 area. Next cfl are not even close to being as efficient as a hid. 588 watts of cfl won't put out the lumen's of 300 watts of hid.

If ya want to grow in a computer case then use cfl. With hid light you can get way more then 350 grams from a 5x5 area. With hid light you should get more then a pound and a half from a 4x4 area.

The pic is Blockhead

5.4 sq ft area

not 5x5

588 / 42 = 14 lights

14 * 2800 = 39200 lumens

39299 / 5.4 = 7259 lumens

explain how either of them have preference over another?

both of them are virtually the same thing when growing mj.

except that M^2 is a measurement of area and W is a measurement of power (J/s)

that's clearly not the same thing

To use cfl when hid can work in the same place is a waste. Hid puts out over twice the lumens per watt as cfl esp if you get more then a foot from the bulb. I've yet to see a cfl grown crop that can compare to one grown with hid. Even those 200 watt cfl's are a joke. Less light then a 125 watt hid and floro's just don't have any penatration power.

Info was gathered with a CHY 332 digital light meter I learned a long time ago (been under the lights since 1985) not to trust the info on the side of the bulb box or in their ads.

All I'm saying is do this with floro's

Nah, it was a tall clone with little folage at the bottom so rooting hormone was added to the stem and buried up to the v

ive only considered cfls for their gram/watt output.

I can't speak from experience but with a bit more work it looks like they can produce decent nuggets.

Penetration is appearantly not a issue when you have your plants touching your lights.

HID is definately a winner specially when you want to yield more than 2-3lbs a harvest.

I didn't say they were the same, but they will both argue a point.

"My cfls yield me 1.89 grams per watt, or 3lbs per meter squared"

I guess the meter squared yields would make cfls look more beastly but either can be used to show their efficiency.

The only way I couldn't see it as not being an issue is if you have six inch tall clones or something.... you have a medium to regular sized plant, and you're going to end up with sucker buds - tantalizing gooey buds at the top, with a long, empty stick.

yeah some people on icmag have plants that are 6-7inches tall

drgreenbuds or something with the 588 watt 5.4 sq ft grow is one of them.

I don't really care about cfls, just wanted to learn about them for the most part.

I can safely tell you that if somebody is claiming to have grown 588 grams from 588 watts of cfl light in just 5 sq feet of space, that did not happen. That couldn't be done with a 1000 watt with just 5 sq feet of space unless he was growing bananas.

See if you can even make this happen with cfl light. I'm gonna bet against it.

Thinking about it that would be soo dense.

I've heard of people growing 750grams in a meter squared with large head room.

Anyways I need to be leaving. I have a botany class to attend
