best solvent?

what would you consider the best solvent?
to me clean is first priority....no residues/left overs.
some things i want from a solvent are: clean (when finished), easy to use, easy to find* and effective.
what are all your favourites? i have only worked with ethanol and acetone, so would like some more ideas. The hexane thread up top is very interesting!

Acetone is so sweet, I don't expect to try anything else.

I wanna look into chloroform or ether.
I hear those are champ.
Acetone or Butane seem to be good as they're readily availible, some countries have drug watches (meth, I'd assume) so butane can be hard to find. Acetone is cheaper than butane or hexane (at least where I live) so that may be what I decide to use.
Iso alcohol is gross for making hash with, I only do it when I'm dry and hurting for smoke.

good to know thanks!
is iso (never done it) different in final product than 95% ethanol?

well
iso can be 99%+ alcohol you can also get reagent grade ethanol thats 99%+
usually id compare them at 91 or 99% iso to 95.4% ethanol.
and id say the ethanol is a better solvement if your using 95% ethanol vs iso i've heard the final product will taste less harsh. Iso is notorious for making harsh tasting nasty ass hash. unless your a shiner or live in texas or some place 95% ethanol would be kinda expensive.
butane, hexane, acetone are readily availble most places and definately are superior to iso.

i agree, alcohol is a poor solvent compared to the others available. I prefer hexane since no extraction tube is needed, and also because it doesn't contain water like acetone does. However, acetone is cheaper then hexane by volume, the water can be removed, and does an excellent job of creating a good oil. It's personal preference really.

acetone here is sooooo much cheaper here.
does the water even matter? I mean like shit people water cure their buds, the acetone extracts the good stuff still and you just evaporate everything anyways.
personal preference excluding isopropal* isopropal hash is truely a sin... I've done it but all I could get was isopropal from a 24hour drug store and I wanted to get some smoke asap.

water increases evaporation times. It's not bad per se, you just have to wait longer.

removing water is also more work
I guess it's just a toss up
Would I rather remove some of the water from this acetone or would I rather wait longer?
Personally I'd wait longer because I'd probably not be in any sort of rush.

i just remembered a while ago when i first tried to use acetone. i never knew that some plastics are "melted" by acetone. my deck (concrete) still has a long scar from that day i left a bunch of herb in a plastic jar of acetone...in the sun lol...
anyway, just thought i would mention, use glass

glass or metal is usually a safe bet.
stainless steel is fine for almost everything... generally speaking it's more chemical resistant than glass
plastic id be so iffy on for anything, even 'tane extractions and shit.

that's true.
I personally like to experiment a lot.
I love learning and making my friends ingest possibly cancer causing substances

Acetone is fine if used correctly.
However if you used a unknown solvent in a plastic container without research into if it's safe or not it could possibly have carcinogens.

Acetone evaps completely, and commercial acetone is very pure. Less danger from acetone than the crap you'll eat when the munchies hit, fer sure.

I talked to a grower friend of mine who's been making tons of hash (most of what he grows turns into hash) and said chloroform is his favorite solvent.
and woot! now I know where to find chloroform
