Cacti from seed
#114285 - 08/25/08 04:40 PM (16 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
I just started my first cacti from seed, several different species. I made my own cactus mix, around 1/3 MG potting mix, 1/3 sand, and 1/3 perlite. I also threw in a little fish tank gravel. The soil has a thin layer of sand on top to allow excess moisture to drain away from the cactus flesh and prevent rot. So far so good, I have had germination for 6/7 species within a week.
I will get pics up of all of them soon, but here are some Astrophytum asteria
and five days later:

great stuff man!
one thing i notice with astro seeds is that once they sprout, if there is little air ventilation, the left over seed coats invite mold problems. just a heads up if this fits your growing environment

thanks for the tip! i removed all the seed coats that had popped off after taking these next pics. Most of these I got from winning uarewotueat's contest, a couple i got from trades, and i have some more on the way, including some lophs
Astrophytum asterias
LC001 (T. peruvianus x T .bridgesii? could be the other way around)
LC002 (opposite of LC001, T .bridgesii x T. peruvianus)
Lithops meyeri
a lone T. huasca, same as grandifloras? trying to figure this out...
and a couple T. peruvianus
i also have some T. camarguensis that haven't showed signs of popping yet, fingers are crossed.

probably, for fun. i have some pereskiopsis that is finally starting to grow after i received it in the mail.
the LC001 started to put out some spines yesterday
and i think the first of my lophs popped today.
what should i do in terms of watering/feeding these seedlings? i assume i should keep the sand somewhat moist at all times? i'm just wondering because the A. asterias seems to have stopped growing and i'm clueless from here on out

lophs popped up next to some lithops
a couple Icaro's peruvianus
a couple bridgesii x pachanoi
some T. bridgesii
and the whole show
all of the stuff that popped earlier on has not really grown much in the last week. should i be worried that i'm keeping them too wet or something? or do they just grow really slow from here on out?

don't look at them for a week and you may notice some difference
you shouldn't need to give any water for a while considering the growing medium was saturated before you planted... if the surface starts to dry out just mist them like JM said

you just mixed in sand with miracle grow and perlite sounds cool if it works. I'm gonna start some pedros and some other ornamental fruitng cactus like blue myrtle and prickly pear and was thinking I would need to buy cactus mix, but I already got tons of potting soil.

better soil = better
but mixing the right stuff into shit soil makes it good soil
just try to pick out the big sticks and/or anything that might mold or rot. you dont want those little seedlings getting attacked.

soil + cacti germinating conditions = bad news. the high humidity causes mold, like you mentioned...best to avoid anything like it. if you MUST use a soil type substrate, try coco.

i would venture as far as to say it would almost be better to get some dirt from the earth. bake it. add some sand. some gravel. some perlite (maybe a lil vermiculite, i do) and then you got yourself a decent cacti medium.
ive never done this, bcuz the nursery near me carries good cactus soil.

i forgot to mention that the whole mix was soaked in a dilute fungicide solution for about and hour, then drained and allowed to dry before being used.
i just planted a couple hundred more seeds, i will update soon.

even if old I just tried planting some san pedro seeds still haven't sprouted been at least 3 weeks planted in schultz cacti soil with a littl sand added on top with plastic wrap over the top never let it dry out. That's why I'm thinking of trying some GA I might get some anyway for my kanna seeds.

may be a bit cold.
how deep are they covered?
saturating the medium, then adding seeds, then adding a grain or sands worth of depth on top, then mist, then humidify...
shouldnt have any problems.

i'll try to update this soon. i realized the original soil mix i had them in contained too much sand, i transplanted them all into a much better mix, and growth has really taken off.
here's a little sneak peak for the update

Very nice! Seeing all of your seedlings made me think of all these cactus seeds that I took out for a potential trade...maybe I should start some new ones too!

I have some p. torch and san pedros that I started from seed. They were neglected intermittently...kinda all stuck growing in cups for lack of soil and lack of pots to put them in. Going on 2 years now. They look similar to yours, but are prolly VERY rootbound.

Why should that mean it isn't real?
