you'll want to bend everything down, just not past the point of snapping.  in fact, the further you bend down, the more branching you promote.  i always point the tops directly at the ground in a nice long curve of stem.

the string can touch the stem, just don't tie it tightly around the plant.  i use a bowline (loop) around the stem, so there's room for it to grow without the string starting to cut.

just take the branches and tie them out.. just dont snap them.. the ones we have, we have to tie down so they dont poke above the fence, as they are already over 5 feet tall, and they still got about 8-10 weeks of growing to go.. so yeah.. just make them bend so they grow out instead of up.. this also helps get light to the lower areas of the plant...

nah, myself, i just likes to bend. i hate cutting my plant and only do it when needed. today i tried Soma's method of "supercropping".... i ended up with a few snapped branches : *(

whats supercropping? I could have bent those branches more but didnt wanna risk snappin them couldn't you feel the branches start to snap?

Super Cropping is lightly crushing and rolling the stem towards the top and it will kind of droop over to the side for a few days, but it will recover pretty quickly.

Its effectively like topping the plant but IMO a lot faster method as you don't have to remove any of the new growth.
