Some more defoliation / pruning. The earlier steps of topping and training seem pretty procedural and straightforward, but I get a bit lost during this stage. I never know what to cut and what to leave.
I used these following guidelines I found online, let me know if you have anything to add or change about this:
- all yellowing leaves go. None of the plants have leaves like this so far.
- remove fan leaves being shaded by 2 or more leaves above
- remove fan leaves that are touching the bottom of other leaves for improved airflow
- if any shoots in a growth pair are significantly weaker than the other, remove it so energy is directed to the stronger shoot
Here is a before / after of the AK47:

After some time with the 50% fertilizer blend, looks like I’m getting some signs of nutrient burn. Changing up the blend a bit
New blend:
Blend A: 1/2tsp Neptune’s Harvest (lowered this by 1tsp to reduce nitrogen content) 4tsp Big Bloom (lowered by 2 tsp) 2tsp Grow Big (raised by 1/2tsp for the macronutrients and to balance out lowering the others) 1/2tbsp Kangaroots (raised to 75% for macros and microbes)
Blend B: 4tsp Big Bloom (lowered by 2tsp) 2tsp Grow Big (raised by 1/2tsp) 1/2tbsp Microbe Brew (raised to 75% for macros and microbes)
Also I started slowly lowering the light cycle to 12/12 over the course of the next month. So in a couple of weeks I’ll change it up again to get rid of the fish and add the calmag

Doing ok. Getting ready for Fall trout season. Always good to have a doob tube with a joint or two in the tackle box, but I ran out of bud from last years grow so I’m back on the medical.

Hell yea, I've been meaning to get into fly fishing a little more since I moved out west.
I've been trying to get out hiking now that it's cooling off a bit.

Nice, do you tie your own flies? I picked up someone’s fly tying kit at a yard sale a few years ago but still never got around to learning. I need to go get a good fly rod and learn how to use it, I’m using all spinning rods now

My fishing buddy bought me a fly rod, but I still haven’t practiced with it yet. My brother in law says it’s the best kind of fishing.

What kind of fly rod is it? Now might be a good time to start practicing, brook and brown trout tend to get territorial and aggressive with the Fall spawn. I got my tackle all sorted out already practicing my spinning gear on bluegills

It’s a Cortland FairPlay, fairly common beginners rod I believe. Unfortunately no practicing for me this year, threw out my back a few weeks ago.
A year or two ago I was catching rainbow like crazy, nearly every cast I’d pull one up, some were nearly two feet long! Went back to the same spot a few weeks later, and didn’t catch a thing.

That’s fishing for ya those fish are smarter than people give them credit for. They learn what snacks to avoid so they don’t get caught.

I don’t think that was nutrient burn that I noticed earlier… I see some small white bugs crawling around on the underside of the leaves, and tiny white specks of damage on top of a few leaves. Going to start with a foliar spray. I was reading dawn dish soap or neem oil diluted in water and sprayed before lights out can help. I always have dawn on hand, it killed fleas and yellowjackets for me before.

DO NOT USE DAWN!! What you want to use is a potassium based soap, not a detergent. Dr bronners Castile soap is what I use, about 1 tbsp per gallon or so iirc.
Also, try to identify the bugs. If they are aphids, you’re going to want to take a different approach than if they’re thrips.

Thanks, I have some dr bronners too. I’m pretty sure they are spider mites, the damage on the leaves is tiny white specks. I see tiny pinpoint sized white bugs crawling around on the underside of the leaves. I didn’t see any webs yet on my plants but I checked my gf’s houseplants and a couple of them have worse infestations with the webbing, so I think that’s where they came from.
I can try the dr bronners foliar spray. Should it be done daily until they are gone? Once a week? Also I read that pointing a fan towards the plants can help prevent the mites from breeding because they need more stagnant air, maybe some more defoliation will help.
For flowering, do you recommend I get some predatory mites?

If it’s mites, you may as well forget about it. You might be able to slow them down a bit, but that’s about it. Without using something that will trash your herb.

Pirate bugs are pretty efficient at cleaning up pests.

They are not too bad right now, looks a lot worse on the houseplants. I separated the houseplants maybe can try to keep the mites under control.
I read your comment about the dawn too late and used diluted dawn in water as a spray last night and plant seems fine, I don’t see any more mites at all so I think it worked and did another defoliation this morning for better airflow. Next spray though I’m using the dr bronners and I’ll try to get some pirate bugs for when the flowering starts. The dr bronners I have is the citrus one, should that be ok or another one would be better?
