Androcell’s 2024 summer grow
#868054 - 07/02/24 09:10 AM (5 months, 17 days ago) |

I had success with the paper towel in ziplock bag germination method last year, just started germinating the seeds for this year’s grow with the same method. Moved the grow space to the room with the skylights, so they will have a combo of timed grow lights plus natural sun.
Two of the bag seeds (Inzane) plus a few feminized seeds I got online: - AK-47 - White Widow - Bubblegum - Gold Leaf
The seeds were in a bundle pack so if I have success then I’ll likely grow the same strains for the next few years. I’ll update when the seeds germinate.

Solo cups set up, lights placed around 6 inches above at 45% timed for 18h days.
I’ll post pictures once they sprout. Pretty much the same setup as last time, but with lights instead of the window. Hopefully there will be no stretching this time
Soil is a 3 gallon bag of fox farm ocean forest with 2 cups vermiculite mixed in.

All of the seeds sprouted within 24 hours after planting, except for the white widow. I did notice the taproot bent when I took it out of the paper, so I’m going to germinate another one. I’ll give it until the new one sprouts before I toss it though, I don’t want to count it as a loss just yet.

Still no sprout and no germination from this second seed. Starting to think the white widows are shot. As a backup plan, I’m going to germinate a few bag seeds in case nothing comes of the white widow.
The good news though is the seedlings are looking great.

I started germinating a couple more white widow seeds yesterday along with the bag seeds as a backup. So now I have 2 white widows with taproots out and planted. If these bag seeds germinate then I might plant them and give them away to friends when they sprout, I only want 6 plants but don’t want to toss the extras.

Just wanted to give a quick update. Seedlings are growing fast and are looking great. I’ll update with pictures once I repot and top, the plan is to go with mainlining this time. The tek I am using recommends topping down to node 3 after letting plant grow to 5-6 nodes. So my plan is to repot at 5 nodes, let it recover enough to grow the 6th node, then top. I’m going to try to root the tops for a friend, I’ll share progress there too.
The gold leaf already has the 5th node coming in now, so I’ll repot today. The others are coming close, except for the white widows which gave me troubles before.
Edit: on second thought I think I’ll top first and repot later. Reviewing my last log I topped a week before I repotted, and the stem was a lot thicker and sturdier.

Gold leaf now has 6th node growing in, here is a before picture:
After topping to third node and trimming everything below. I’ll remove these fan leaves once the two new mains are established:
Planted a clone for a friend. Cut stem at a 45 degree angle, removed bottom node, scraped some skin off the stem and put into a solution of water and honey for 15 seconds, dipped in rooting powder then planted. A second solo cup is over the top as a humidity dome:
Bumped the grow light above the bigger plants to 65%, the light above the small seedlings and clone is still 45%.
Also once plants recover from topping, going to start fertilizing. I kept it simple last year, this year I want to experiment a bit and create a blend that works best for my specific growing environment. Plan is to start at 25% manufacturer’s recommended dose, and go up / adjust from there. Got together a few different fertilizers based on a friends recommendation, his plants are super nice so I trust it.
These are the fertilizers and manufacturer instructions per gallon for reference (my friend said he uses a lot less than what is shown here in his own blends): Vegetative stage only: Neptunes fish fertilizer / 1tbsp / once per week / stop a couple weeks before flowering FF Grow Big (hydroponic) / 3tsp / every other watering
All stages: FF Big bloom / 4tbsp / every other watering FF Kangaroots / 2tsp / once per week FF Microbe brew / 2tsp / once per week
Flowering: FF calmag / 1tbsp / once per week / start a couple weeks before flowering Tiger bloom / 3tsp / every other watering / start at first sign of bud development Stop all fertilizing a couple weeks before harvest
Fish, kangaroots, microbe brew, and calmag look like it should be every other feeding, so I will alternate between microbe and fish/kangaroots, then microbe and kangaroots/calmag

Both of the Inzanes have the sixth node growing in, so I topped and trimmed. Took a clone of the bigger of the two.
Inzane 1 before and after:
Inzane 2 before/after and clone:
Edit: also wanted to make note of the addition of diatomaceous earth at this point for the plants that are established. Spoonful of it spread across the top of the soil. None yet for the seedlings that were planted late and the clones.

Prepared first batch of fertilizer blend to use once the topped plants re-establish themselves. Blend A and Blend B will alternate for the vegetative stage. Amount is per gallon of dechlorinated tap water (left to sit for 48 hours)
Blend A: 3/4tsp Neptune’s Harvest 1tbsp Big Bloom 3/4tsp Grow Big 1/2tsp Kangaroots
Blend B: 1tbsp Big Bloom 3/4tsp Grow Big 1/2tsp Microbe Brew
Normally the tap water is a bit basic and needs a few drops of PH down. Fertilizer brings it wayyyy down. Needed around 30 drops of PH up to bring blend A to the right levels, 25 for Blend B.

AK47 before/after and clone:
Bubblegum before/after and clone. It had 6th node growing in like the others, but this is the shortest and bushiest plant, so I hope there is enough stem to establish roots. Like the others, I cut off the bottom node of the cutting and scraped the skin off the stem to encourage root growth, will keep a close eye on this one:

New gold leaf mains are getting long enough to tie down now. They each have second node growing in, I’ll wait for these to turn upwards and grow third node before topping and pruning again:
I don’t want to spam a ton of pictures doing the same steps on all plants, so I’ll continue sharing steps for just gold leaf until anything significant happens, or if something is different with one of the other plants.

Unfortunately I was too rough and snapped the stem of one of the new mains on the gold leaf while trying to redo the wire to hold it down. It is not snapped completely off, just a bit split where it connects to the original main
As you can see I put a small piece of tape where it broke, hopefully it heals itself and comes back. But with the leaves on that main drooping like that I’m not feeling very confident. I was going to use this one to model the steps of mainlining, but now I may choose one of the others for that since they are all doing great.
I’ll still share progress of this one, the other main is doing fine so I should still be able to grow it out to flower even if it’s not a perfect mainline

Messed up again, this time one of the new mains snapped off one of the Inzane plants.
Removed the wire from all of the plants, it is too difficult to be gentle working with wire. All of the healthy plants are now using twine. Didn’t have any problems with twine and clothespins last year, much easier to work with:
Below are the gold leaf and inzane that I messed up. Topped and pruned, plan is to mainline like normal off of the surviving main if possible. If not I’ll just wing it and see what happens, if I get at least a few nugs off these I’ll be happy
Also an update on the clones, they all seem healthy and I see noticeable growth on all of them except for the bubblegum. Maybe that one was cut too soon, but I’ll still keep an eye on it for another week or so. It’s not wilting or anything.
I read online you can gently twist them in the soil to tell if they have roots yet. The inzane and AK clones have obvious roots since they won’t budge, but the gold leaf clone moves way too easily. Hopefully the roots come in soon. I didn’t bother testing the bubblegum, figured it would be best to leave it alone. Started removing the humidity domes for a bit each day to vent the clones

Second topping for the normal plants.
To reiterate, waited for 5-6 nodes for first topping and topped at 3rd node. For second topping, waited for 3rd node to come in on each main and topped down to first node and will do the same for the third topping (for 8 colas per plant).
Using Bubblegum as the model, before and after:

An update on the clones now too. Growth on the Inzane clone exploded over night. Bubblegum is growing fine too. I tossed the AK47 and Gold Leaf clones since they were turning brown and not rooting. 2 clones out of 4 isn’t bad, considering all my clones failed last year. My gf found a planter at a thrift store to hold 18 cuttings in water, may try that next year

Some more defoliation / pruning. The earlier steps of topping and training seem pretty procedural and straightforward, but I get a bit lost during this stage. I never know what to cut and what to leave.
I used these following guidelines I found online, let me know if you have anything to add or change about this:
- all yellowing leaves go. None of the plants have leaves like this so far.
- remove fan leaves being shaded by 2 or more leaves above
- remove fan leaves that are touching the bottom of other leaves for improved airflow
- if any shoots in a growth pair are significantly weaker than the other, remove it so energy is directed to the stronger shoot
Here is a before / after of the AK47:

After some time with the 50% fertilizer blend, looks like I’m getting some signs of nutrient burn. Changing up the blend a bit
New blend:
Blend A: 1/2tsp Neptune’s Harvest (lowered this by 1tsp to reduce nitrogen content) 4tsp Big Bloom (lowered by 2 tsp) 2tsp Grow Big (raised by 1/2tsp for the macronutrients and to balance out lowering the others) 1/2tbsp Kangaroots (raised to 75% for macros and microbes)
Blend B: 4tsp Big Bloom (lowered by 2tsp) 2tsp Grow Big (raised by 1/2tsp) 1/2tbsp Microbe Brew (raised to 75% for macros and microbes)
Also I started slowly lowering the light cycle to 12/12 over the course of the next month. So in a couple of weeks I’ll change it up again to get rid of the fish and add the calmag

Nice, do you tie your own flies? I picked up someone’s fly tying kit at a yard sale a few years ago but still never got around to learning. I need to go get a good fly rod and learn how to use it, I’m using all spinning rods now

What kind of fly rod is it? Now might be a good time to start practicing, brook and brown trout tend to get territorial and aggressive with the Fall spawn. I got my tackle all sorted out already practicing my spinning gear on bluegills

It’s a Cortland FairPlay, fairly common beginners rod I believe. Unfortunately no practicing for me this year, threw out my back a few weeks ago.
A year or two ago I was catching rainbow like crazy, nearly every cast I’d pull one up, some were nearly two feet long! Went back to the same spot a few weeks later, and didn’t catch a thing.

I don’t think that was nutrient burn that I noticed earlier… I see some small white bugs crawling around on the underside of the leaves, and tiny white specks of damage on top of a few leaves. Going to start with a foliar spray. I was reading dawn dish soap or neem oil diluted in water and sprayed before lights out can help. I always have dawn on hand, it killed fleas and yellowjackets for me before.

DO NOT USE DAWN!! What you want to use is a potassium based soap, not a detergent. Dr bronners Castile soap is what I use, about 1 tbsp per gallon or so iirc.
Also, try to identify the bugs. If they are aphids, you’re going to want to take a different approach than if they’re thrips.

Thanks, I have some dr bronners too. I’m pretty sure they are spider mites, the damage on the leaves is tiny white specks. I see tiny pinpoint sized white bugs crawling around on the underside of the leaves. I didn’t see any webs yet on my plants but I checked my gf’s houseplants and a couple of them have worse infestations with the webbing, so I think that’s where they came from.
I can try the dr bronners foliar spray. Should it be done daily until they are gone? Once a week? Also I read that pointing a fan towards the plants can help prevent the mites from breeding because they need more stagnant air, maybe some more defoliation will help.
For flowering, do you recommend I get some predatory mites?

If it’s mites, you may as well forget about it. You might be able to slow them down a bit, but that’s about it. Without using something that will trash your herb.

Pirate bugs are pretty efficient at cleaning up pests.

They are not too bad right now, looks a lot worse on the houseplants. I separated the houseplants maybe can try to keep the mites under control.
I read your comment about the dawn too late and used diluted dawn in water as a spray last night and plant seems fine, I don’t see any more mites at all so I think it worked and did another defoliation this morning for better airflow. Next spray though I’m using the dr bronners and I’ll try to get some pirate bugs for when the flowering starts. The dr bronners I have is the citrus one, should that be ok or another one would be better?

I’d start with the dr bronners, spraying twice a week for three weeks or so, being sure to hit every surface of the plant. It helps to rub new growth tips between your fingers as you spray them to ensure full coverage. You can also add spike lavender essential oils, as well as peppermint or eucalyptus, I believe all three help deter the mites, but it’s possible to overdo it and harm the plants so use sparingly. The citrus bronners should be fine.
Predatory mites for flowering sounds good, green lacewing eggs wouldn’t be a bad idea either, but they’d eat the predatorys as well so plan your use accordingly.
Spider mites are one of the easiest mites to get rid of, but still not easy. I’d subject your houseplants to the same treatments so they don’t come back.
And as brains mentioned, the hardcore miticides work, but will systemically poison your crop. Some growers over at the shroomery have been recommending them to people because they believe it’s safe if you wait three weeks, but this is simply not the case. There’s a reason their use is banned in the legal market.
Oof, hopefully you didn’t use much of the dawn. It can damage the leaves quite badly.

It was around half a tablespoon diluted in a gallon of water and I drenched the plants. Just plain blue dawn, I keep a huge bottle around for a lot of different uses. I wont use it again but seems like I was lucky this time with the plants looking unphased by it. I’ll keep an eye on it in case signs of damage start showing up, hopefully it would be able to bounce back if that happens.

Still slowly changing the light cycle a bit each day until it is 12/12. I expect flowering in a couple weeks so I’m stopping the fish fertilizer and adding the calmag based on the manufacturer guidelines. Blend A: 1/2tsp cal mag (starting with a small dose to see how plants are affected) 4tsp Big Bloom 2tsp Grow Big 2tsp Kangaroots (raised to 100%)
Blend B: 4tsp Big Bloom 2tsp Grow Big 2tsp Microbe Brew (raised to 100%)

A couple weeks of spider mite treatments so far, plants are looking great.
Here is the AK47 treated and watered. Did some more pruning and defoliation after this pic was taken

I see pistils!
Fox farm instructions say to switch out grow big with tiger bloom at first sign of flowering, so going forward my fertilizer blends will have 2tsp of tiger bloom instead of the grow big. Also stopping foliar spray and ordering predatory mites now. A friend recommended Natures Good Guys, she had a lot of success with these for her spider mite issues. Amblyseius andersoni, says they target a variety of mites including spider mites and perform well on indoor plants with heavy trichomes.

Plants are looking great, buds are forming, predatory mites are doing their thing. I upped the calmag to 1tsp. I’ll update with pictures in a few days

3 weeks into flowering. I plan to defoliate soon before the buds start putting on weight, redirect the energy to the bud growth.
Also the predatory mites seem to be doing their job. Spider mites have pretty much vanished as far as I can tell.
For now here are some pics:
Inzane:
Bubblegum:
Gold leaf:
Inzane 2:
White widow:

So far only the Gold Leaf looks like it might be ready for harvest. No more white hairs and some of the trichomes are starting to turn amber under the jewelers loupe. currently stopping fertilizer for this one to flush it out for a week or two before I chop it
Edit: also making a note for myself here, starting the flush of the white widow now too. I wasn’t sure because I didn’t see any amber trichomes yet, but they are looking milky and there’s no white hairs anymore. The buds are looking pretty thick too.

Harvested and did a wet trim of the gold leaf and white widow. Saved the trim for edibles
The other plants still need more time, but I think AK47 is close. Going to start the flush of this one and keep the others on the regular fertilizer schedule

Wet trim buds dry pretty fast, moved these to the curing jars this morning. Weight of dry buds was a little over a half ounce per plant (I think I let them dry a bit too long too so maybe there’s some water weight missing), not counting the trim which I’ll weigh up at the end after all the plants are harvested. I’m not surprised, these are pretty small plants. I think the others will weigh out heavier, some of them are pretty dense with their buds

I thought the AK-47 was close but it keeps growing new white pistils. I was reading this can happen for some strains, I guess it will take a bit longer than expected.
One of the Inzanes is looking ready though. Might harvest this over the weekend.
