Do you like whiskey? Scotch? If so, how do you like yours? On ice? With coke? Neat?
Do any of you know anything about Lagavulin 16?

I usually drink a small glass at the end of a drinking evening. Like I'll pour a shot worth. Nice splash of water (I'm sorry I can't drink it straight). I'll sip while I'm drinking another beer and while having a cigarette.

I prefer whiskey (Bourbon) over scotch, but I generally have to be in the right mood for either.
If I do drink it, I usually drink it neat, and usually pair it with a cigar (I also don't smoke very often, but when I do I try to make it worth the nicotine exposure).

I bought a bottle of Lagavulin 16 today. Paid $113 bucks for it. And I'm no baller, believe me. Hopefully this bottle lasts me a few months (my last expensive bottle of bourbon, Garrison Brothers, lasted me a few months).
I only have a small glass like once a week or once every two weeks. I just really have wanted to try this for the longest, because it's generally considered one of the top (if not the top) scotches out there. It's been highly recommended to me by a few people. But man, it has a pretty gnarly description when you surf the web looking at how people describe it. One thing that seems to pop up the most is that it's pungent. I've heard those who love it describe it tasting like a lovely beach campfire (lol okay), while others who did not like it described it as tasting like licking an ashtray from a dirty hole in the wall bar. Gross. But all agree that it is very, very smoky. And peaty. They say it's super deep. Oh so deep. Highly complex. Caramelized wheat, salty, sweet, hints of orange, red cherry and even smoked fish (wtf??). Among many, many other descriptions. I saw one person who didn't like it that said it tasted like licking the side of an old boat that has been sitting in the ocean for a while. The descriptions are wildly all over the place. I guess like everything, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
But anyway, whether I love it or hate it, I finally get to try it now. Will probably try it this weekend. This scotch is aged 16 years, btw. I'll let you guys know how it is.

This article here, from 2021, ranks Lagavulin 16 as its #1 scotch.
https://manofmany.com/lifestyle/drinks/best-scotch-whisky-brands
Quote:
1. Lagavulin
The one, the only: Lagavulin. Popularised by actor Nick Offerman (who was recently honoured with his own release), this Islay-based distillery has mastered the art of single malt Scotch. Its 16 Year statement is quite simply the stuff of legend and one of the world’s best whiskies, presuming you have a penchant for peat. Like refined molasses melting over a bonfire, it delivers palpable layers of sweet and pungent smoke. More than a quality brand, Lagavulin will awaken dormant taste buds.
Region: Islay Founded in: 1816 Best-known expression: 16 Year

Okay not that anyone cares about my novice scotch review lol but I did try it this past weekend. Lagavulin 16'. Only had one very small drink, so further research and exploration of this bottle will be required, but I liked it. Certainly preferred it to the last bottle of bourbon I had (Garrison Brothers). And I know that bourbon and scotch are different. But I think from now on I will be exploring the world of scotch as opposed to the world of whiskey & bourbon.

When i was an alcoholic i drank jack daniels. For some reason i never got a hang over from it, ever. On the other hand if i drank more than 3 beers of any kind-hangover. I preferred to mix the JD with dry ginger ale. I dont drink anything anymore but if i did it would be jd whiskey around a campfire at the beach. Not a fan of smokey flavours.

Honestly I have yet to even venture into the world of scotch, I feel like I need to really buy a good expensive top shelf bottle to really experience it. I hated whiskey for a long long time but for now it seems I really enjoy Jack Daniels. I wish they wouldn't charge so much for their flavored varieties but I suppose its good inspiration to get a regular bottle and spruce the drinks up(cinnamon/spice/honey/apple)
but, for now, I say jager > all

I'm heading to New Mexico this morning. Got a really cool place rented out for a few days. It's surrounded by stunning scenery and pretty private. About to make the 9 hour drive. I got my bottle of Lagavulin with me. Going to partake a little bit over the next few days.

Do you prefer the smokey/islay scotches?
I pretty much only go for the highland non-peated ones, except for Oban or blends that have some slight smoke. I feel like it's probably an acquired taste and if I went to a tasting or something I could get into it.
I actually used to run whiskey tastings but always avoided the peated ones. Got to sample Macallan 25 sherried once... tasted almost like candy with zero burn to it

rum is too sweet man. rye whiskey is where its at. Have you tried any good rums?
Nice bottle Niffla, picked up a Bowmore 12 year as my introduction to scotch and it was pretty good.

Bacardi superior is my favorite because it was the favorite drink of the people that raised me, RIP. As for spiced rum there was one called kraken that I really liked
