Roasting coffee beans

Anyone ever tried roasting their own coffee beans?
I recently bought some green coffee beans to try my hand at home roasting. I"ve heard that freshly roasted coffee is in a league of its own and the only way for me to try it here in Arka-fucking-Hee-Haw was to do it myself. My first batch was alright, better than store-bought coffee but not by a lot.
My second batch though... Holy Shit
I don't drink coffee for the caffeine kick, I drink it for the taste, so a dark roast is my goal. The heat helps bring all the oils and flavor out.
Look at these beans. They look wet, but that's not water, its oil.

I'd recommend adding some CBD to them. It will help in the long run with the jitters.

Umm, no
If you think I'm doing this to get the coffee jitters, you missed the whole point and need to go back and re-read the original post.

There's a local roaster, Crappie coffee. It was the freshest stuff I could find, and had a delicious flavor. I liked it so much I used to 2 cups of it each and every morning!

I think you missed his point. His advice was to avoid the jitters associated with drinking coffee. If you don't do it for the caffeine "high" it's a good way to counter it. That way you get the taste, without the boost.

Some people just don't read well.
I NEVER get the coffee jitters .... EVER
It's not a hard thing to avoid for fucks sake.
Telling me to put some other chemical in my coffee to avoid something I don't experience is fucking retarded.

My parents used to buy only green coffee beans and roasted them in a big wok.
We'd have to open all the windows and the house would smell like burning shit for a week. I think they just roasted too much at a time.
Now that I actually drink coffee, I'd bet those beans you got there make a nice morning drinky drink

Roasting coffee beans is no different than learning to cook any new dish, practice makes perfect.
It's hard to get an even, light roast using a stovetop method. I did a small, light-roast batch just to see how it would turn out. It was good but, in a different way than the dark roasts. More nutty and less bitter than the darker roast
Here's a pix of it:
You can clearly see that some beans are darker than others. The best you can do for a light roast is to take them through the first crack and avoid getting into the second crack.
It's fairly easy to do a decent dark roast though. Just be careful to not get the pan too hot and keep the beans moving at all times.
The last dark roast I did I got them too hot and burned all the oils up. It was some really nasty shit and I ended up tossing it all out lol
I've just about got my tech down now though and am about to do another dark roast. Will post pix when I'm done.

Here is the latest batch.
It's more of a medium/dark roast.
It smells delicious and should be my best roast so far.
I have enough for one more batch and will take this next one all the way to a full dark roast.
Slow and steady seems to be the best method with temps between 375 and 450f

Here's a video of them, the shininess on the beans is the oils.

And my attempt at a light roast.
This is by far the hardest to do. You must keep a close eye on the temps and not let the pan get above about 375. You want them to go thru the first crack but not get near the second crack.

Alright, now that I've finished all of my fresh-roasted beans and went back to store-bought coffee, I can say that there is a HUGE difference in how they affect me.
The fresh beans didn't fuck with my prostrate like store-bought coffee does. I could drink 2-3 cups of fresh coffee and not notice any excessive need to go piss. However, one small cup of store-bought coffee had me pissing all fucking morning
Not sure why this is either

I live by tons of coffee farmers... I recently learned that ALL the local coffee farmers here soak their crops in Monsanto chemicals so they wont lose it to bugs, but they can't really flush them after or it fucks with the coffee beans.
Needless to say I prefer organic now

I think that in 2021 people got performant coffee machines for roasting coffee beans. It's very hard to use your own hands for this action. I am a big coffee lover. So, I've read about the best programable coffee makers on https://coffeespiration.com/best-programmable-coffee-makers/. Such coffee machines are a little expensive, but they are worth it. The most interesting feature is the fact that these machines got their own cleaning system that is working automatically. And believe me, the taste of coffee made by these coffee makers is the best.

It's not hard to roast coffee beans at home with a cast iron dutch oven. It just needs constant stirring, that's the only downside to home roasting. It only takes 20-30 minutes once you get your tec down and the results are impressive.

Roasting coffee actually stinks pretty bad, especially if you go for a darker roast.
It needs to sit for a few hours, generally overnight, before it starts smelling right.
